I read somewhere that it was more effective and accurate to raise the barn door mount with the screw than to lower it with the screw. This would also make a difference how the mount was aligned with the hinge on the left or the right. Opinions? If I'm lowering it, the hinge would be on the right, if I'm raising it, hinge would be on left. Do I have this right?

From the Northern hemisphere, the sky moves COUNTERclockwise around the North Polar axis. So yes, the hinge would be on the right when facing North if you want to lower the mount.
