Hello all,
A few days ago I found a 5-pack of Fuji Provia 400X in the camera store I usually buy films. The 400X is a new emulsion which replaced 400F. I was interested to see if the spectral response would still be good enough for h-alpha nebulas.
Two days ago the skies cleared so I had the opportity to test the film. My targets were comet Holmes and M42. I use a Pentax 6x7 medium format camera. Comet Holmes was captured wide field with a 150mm lens and M42 with my Pentax 105 SDP apo refractor.
Here's a crop of M42, 40-min exposure. Scanned with Epson V700 and a bit of curves adjustment after scanning. I'm quite pleased with the result. The grain is very fine (this photo is 25% of the original scanned size) and a lot of the nebula was captured. Unfortunately I did not manage to make a direct comparison with the older emulsion but I'm very satisfied with the new one.
I still have some 15-20 rolls of 400F in my fridge though

Good to know, I still have some 400F in both 35mm and 120. Now if I could only get 400x in 4x5 (they don't make it)

Looks good - if maybe a bit on the violet side. The blues really came out -0 you need to shoot M45 now! I think perhaps the 400X shifts the red compared to 400F. For a test, I think one of each of these will show the real effect of the emulsions.
1. REDS: M8 - Lagoon nebula 2. BLUES: M45 - Pleiades 3. YELLOWS: Area around Antares

Good suggestions, thanks Clownfish! Next time I'll try M45 nad perhaps I'll manage it with 400F for comparison.

Boris,
Very good. Perhaps 400X will become an optional film, especially where blue response is a consideration. I will be running a roll of 400X through on the next dark run. I would like to see your 150mm shot of Holmes.
