Hi all,
A newly published book on atmospheric phenomena is Kaleiodoscope Sky (ok, I had to check the spelling ) by Tim Herd which is also tied in to a web site set up by the author at http://www.kaleidoscopesky.net/
I had it on pre-order at Amazon for a few months and it arrived last week. It's a beautiful book with gorgeous pictures of atmospheric phenomena like rare halos, rainbows in many guises, and lightning. Each chapter covers a particular class of sky phenomena and is written very well with clear explanations of the causes of each. The book is nice and compact ... not quite pocket-sized but close.
It is well worth picking up a copy or two for not just yourself but for anyone you know who has even just a passing interest in seeing the sky with the unaided eye.
Living in cloudy Ireland we sure get to see quite a few of the phenomena Tim Herd describes
Order direct from the author or http://www.amazon.com/Kaleidoscope-Sky-Tim-Herd/dp/081099397X/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1196168087&sr=8-1
all the best,
John

Looks great, and quite reasonably priced, too.
I live in some of the heavier light pollution one can find & don't currently have a car, so have to be satisfied with what sky phenomena I can see between the buildings.
Thanks for the tip!

Hi Chexmix,
It looks like Barnes and Noble will stock that book too so it could be a nice stocking filler for Christmas
I contacted Tim last week and he is a real nice guy and welcomes any images for the page. The photography tips section on his site is excellent too.
I was staying in a friend's apartment near the George Washington Bridge last September and the lights from the bridge really lit up the place! All the same, I was nicely surprised to see the brighter stars when out strolling in the evening time and also spying Jupiter between the high-rises.
All the best,
John

How I wish I didn't have to constantly remind friends and family "no, really! I really DO like books better than almost anything else!"
If I don't do that, I'm liable to get just socks with nothin' inside ...

I know what you mean.
Last year my brother gave me a huge torch with a gazillion candlepower. Ok, maybe I want to signal Mars with it
The year before? He gave me a book called "The Greatest Ever UFO Alien Abduction Stories".
I really need to explain the hobby of astronomy a bit better to him
