M42 & Provia 400X
      #2016171 - 11/29/07 01:55 AM Attachment (79 downloads)

Hello all,

Here's finally a processsed version of my M42 shot on Fuji Provia 400X. This is a combination of three exposures - 1, 6 and 40 minutes. This is just a crop of the central part of the FOV - I messed up making the flat field in PixInsight, so the edges are horrible.

Here you can see I managed to capture some of the outer faint nebulosity. I'll definitely try shooting with E200!

Oh yes, the telescope is a Pentax 105 SDP.

really nice, I have a bunch of 400F left, but when I run out I may try the 400X (unless I am doing 4x5 fully at that time, in which case its all moot.

Excellent!! You caught a good deal of the faint outer nebulosity, which gives the bright core an almost cocoon appearance. And a very nice job stacking the three - you have good detail of the brighter inner core! Very nice!

I really like your image. Well captured. I've been wondering about stacking slide exposures as well. I have been led to understand that the Provia will capture more of the blue, green compared to E200, which is supposed to be king of the red???

I've got E200 coming as well to try. I've shortened my exposure time on open clusters, and hope to post them shortly. I like the very dark background which really contrasts the star colours. That's why I really like yours. Did the stacking of 1 minute give you that background or was that due to processing? Going longer on clusters than 10 minutes with Provia 400 does bring out some faint stars, but the background starts to lighten up bringing out the blue - purple colour.

You might be onto something with the stacking. Who knows - it might callenge the digital buys. Combining images with HA filters, or Minus Violet? Worth experimenting.

That's true.

No, I only used the 1 and 6 min exposures for M42 core which was overexposed in the 40 minute exposure. The background was corrected in PixInsight. You say it looks very dark but that may be different on different monitors. Juct before I processed this photo I calibrated my 21" Samsung LCD with Spyder2 hardware calibrator. Here at work the background looks much lighter.

Definitely! HA will help but MV is good only for achromats, IMHO. I'll try stacking E200 shots in future exposures. The main problem in film astrophotography is the long exposure times which require perfect tracking. Short sub exposures with DSLR's are very convenient

Hi Boris,

very good overview with faint surrounding details! It looks here on my laptop a little bit bluish. May be calibration is not as it should be...

Indeed it's bluish but that's the film's response..it does not record red as well as E200.

Thanks!

400X seems to really have smaller grain, just as Fuji says. Fuji also claims more vivid colors, but this is hard to verify on astronomical objects

I'm going to see if I can find some here in Pretoria. On 8 December I will get my first chance to do some AP since October, 2005! Can't wait!

Excellent pic. The running man came out really well. I also like the extra wide FOV provided by the 35mm film.

Boris,

Excellent work! Looks like a good galaxy film with the blue response. Try it on the Andromeda, I would like to see that! Again, great job. I have a 120 roll of 400X I hope to run through in December.

Get to bed early on the 8th of December because the 9th is vikingcraftsman birthday. And you know CF the world stands still for 30 seconds for that.

Actually this was shot on 6x7 format. I cropped it because of bad flat field correction I did in PixInsight. The "real" FOV extends to the Horsehead nebula!
