I did exactly the same thing. Out watering the garden as the sunset, and I looked low in the west, sure the Moon should be visible by now. There was nothing there. Watching a bird fly by, suddenly I was gaping at the first quarter Moon. Between the weather and other obligations on my time, I completely lost track. (I suddenly identified with Samwise coming out of Lothlorien - only I haven't been having nearly as much fun!)
