A desire to go beyond Infinite Focus
      #20253 - 11/13/03 05:06 PM

I have a pair of the Orion Little Giant 11x70 binoculars that I got as one of thier "2nd's" (a returned or display model) for about $198 shipped. Mine were in very good condition and the only noticable difference was a slight decoloration of about a 1.5 sq inch area on the outside grip. I find that the 70mm objectives provided very crisp bright images but the focus is only OKAY. It doesn't seem to "snap" into place. Sometimes I feel like I want to set the focus farther than the infinite setting... Anyone know what this means? This might just be me though. I have 20/15 vision with each eye and it seems like with both eyes open I have 20/10 (I can read the last line on my doctors' eye chart... and on this chart it goes farther than the 20/20 line). Maybe my eyes need a different focus?

Maybe this has to do with a large exit pupil and therefore in my fairly bright suburban skies my pupils can fully dialate and more astigmatism is shown?

It's possible these binocs were not adjusted for infinite focus.

When you take the eyepiece assembly out of the binocs by disconnecting the retaining screw that holds in the focusing shaft, if it is not adjusted properly when reassembled, it will change the close focus-distant focus settings. It's possible this was done and not put back correctly.

I know this to be true, as I've had several pair of binoculars apart and the reassembly is always a trial and error procedure to get it right.

I recommend getting a copy of the book "Choosing, Using and Repairing Binocular" by J.W. Seyfried the presidnet of University Optics. he clearly explains the disassembly - reassembly procedure. I got my copy of the book from Edmund.

Hey Squeak,

You menttioned you have astigmatism. My astigmatism is very noticable with binocs, so I now wear my glasses when using binocs. Do you correct for your astigmatism.

No I don't. Maybe I need glasses or something. But my vision is fine normally. Though I've never really checked my near vision, and I suppose that matters a lot for the binoculars.

If you're still having the problem of seeming to not quite reach focus for objects at infinity, my previous suggestion may be the problem. I've had this happen with binocs before. the fix is not so difficult, if it turns out that's what is needed.

Everything Ed has suggested COULD be your problem Squeak but this kind of situation is another very good reason for owning more than one binocular !

Spouses may be notorious for questioning the need for multiple onwership and this is as good a reason as any !

So many "problems" that COULD be this or that with binocular viewing can easily be eliminated when you have a known "good" bino against which to compare or measure so many things.

Failing this of course it is not usually TOO difficult to borrow some other binos for a day and night or even a few minutes to confirm whether or not a problem is instrument or user related.

Worth a try perhaps ? -- regards -Kenny.
