Here's my first shot at the Pleaides. Canon Rebel Ti prime focused to a Celestron C6n reflector on a CG5 mount. Fujia 400 Sensia film for several minutes.

Well done for your first attempt. M45 is always a great target. Did you focus thru the view finder? Keep it up and post those images. The Sensia appears to be a good film at reasonable cost.

Thanks! I have dual axis guiding motors attached. I have a Orion ST80 for a guide scope. I focused through the viewfinder. I will buy a Meade 12mm reticle eyepiece. It's because the eye relief is longer. I do know that I will probably have to use a barlow with it. I wonder how long would I have to expose to show the blue clouds.

Mark, about your old Edmund reflector. I remember building a 6" f/10 back in the late 60's. I bought the mirrors finished, but, had to drill the holes in the tube, etc. I think it had a grey pedestal mount. And, thanks! My shot of the double clusters came out lousy. That's why I'm getting the reticle eyepiece.

Nice -- your shot is a whole lot better than my first shot of M45.
Capturing the blue nebulosity in M45 is surprisingly difficult. With a DSLR it usually takes hours of exposure to get a good result, but I have no idea how long it takes with film.

s58y. Graet photos! Here's my attempt at the double cluster. And, why I'm getting the reticle eyepiece for guiding. In the eyepiece of my guidescope, the image didn't look like it was moving. But, when the slide was enlarged, it showed up clearly. To comment about my attempt:

Good start!
The blue nebulosity in m45 takes a long time to capture. I find about 30 minutes at f4 about minimum for a decent capture. That's a long exposure, and highly accurate tracking is required.
Now my critical review:
Your shots will benefit by post-processing. If you have access to Photoshop, we can give you some tips. First, there's too much blue. That's a fault of the film, and can be corrected easily.
Both of your shots are out of focus, which is normal when you try and focus with the viewfinder. Your eyes have the ability to focus too, and they re-focus an out-of focus star easily. This means you can never just use your eyes to focus in astrophotography. You will have blurred images 90% of the time. make a simple Hartman Mask, and then later on consider an STI Stelleto focus aid.
The second shot shows clear evidence of Polar Mis-alignment causing Field Rotation. No amount of guiding or accurate tracking will help. You can not "guide-out" Polar mis-alignment. It also shows some tracking error, caused by the mis-alignment as well.
Polar Alignment and focus are the two most frequent causes of astrophoto errors. Once you remove those two sources, your images will improve dramaticaly! Keep working on it!

Thanks Clownfish. I don't have photoshop. I let the camera store that developes the film, put the images on CD.So, a Hartman mask would be easy to make?I will get a STI stelleto when I can. I am in the process, as I mentioned earlier in getting a reticle eyepiece. Also, today I ordered a Oberwerk 20x80 standard binos. From what I've seen the sti stelleto needs to be bought for one specific camera make?. I use a Canon Rebel ti and the Mamiya SRT's.

A Hartmann mask is very simple to make, and very cheap! Use this template generator to figure out what size holes to cut. You can add pieces of wire, or tape to add defraction spikes, but triangle shaped holes will do the same thing. The longer the spikes are, the better the focus.

In looking at how a hartman mask is made. It occured to me that the ota cap looks almost like one. the cap on my c6n has 2 smaller protuding circles at opposite ends. one has a cap that comes off. if only scope companies would make them so that both had removable caps. it would be a hartman mask that came with the scope!

Hi,
I also made one of cardboard ( a little bit thin ) and I asure you it works great. Never new the difference between focussing by eyes and hartman mask makes such a big difference!

Thanks for all the suggestions! i was just wondering how easy it would have been if scope companies gave us the hartman mask with their newts. They just about give us most of one as it is.

I bought an extra end cap for my orion dob from orion for like $15 and cut a couple holes in it. =) Then I actually bought another one and cut holes in it and used it for a solar filter. Works great. =)
