I believe it was the fat one... the body is around the same diameter as the old flashlight bulb. I've thought about changing the resistor, but I don't want to break off any of the electrodes. Also thought of adding some sort of rheostat too.
Found the idea on the internet somewhere with a Radio Shack part number for the LED and a suggested resistor. It's been so long now that I don't recall exactly where. Here is a link to something similar. Not the site I went by, but the same idea.
NOTE: click on the pictures for a larger look and description/part numbers, etc.

As others have noted, Maglite sells an accessory pack for their AA models that includes at least one red replacement lens among other things. The pack also includes a lanyard as well as an anti-roll cap that slips over the head of the instrument and doubles as a quick lens change device. You simply place the desired replacement lens inside the ring and slip over your regular white light and you've now got a red light. I recently bought another of these accessory packs at REI locally for under $5.
I also purchased the NightIze triple LED conversion kit at Wal-Mart for under $5 so I now have a red Maglite with a red lens and a black Maglite with the white LED conversion. To prevent night vision surprises, I hang the red one from the scope mount and carry the white one in my pocket. In a pinch, I slip a red lens inside the anti-roll cover of the white LED flashlight which gives me a second red light.
Note: The white LED is a bit bright as a night vision light even with two red lenses.

I saw some of these kits at Lowes. They had 2 versions - the 3 LED one for the AA maglights, and a brighter 1 LED version for the D-cell ones. The AA version was just under $8.

Thanks, great idea. I have purchased Pezlz headlamp with additional red glass cover but it does not dim the LED light enough.

to dim a light quickly, cut a small hole in a piece of electrical tape and put it over the lens. stick it to side of the flashlight when not in use.

I got a Allen-Bradley red pushbutton lense and put it on the end of my 2 battAA mag lite. fits with a slight friction and turns white again when you pull it off.

The mini-maglite LED conversion kit is too bright for charts, but it is great for setup and teardown of the telescope. It's also great for when you drop something on the ground, like your eyeglasses, and have to hunt for it.
The white D-cell led bulb Nite Ize sells is enormously bright, even with tired batteries. It's a great improvement over the standard bulb, brighter light and much longer battery life.

I bought the 3W single LED bulb conversion for my D-cell Maglight (white light) just to get the extended battery life. I am pleased with the result so far. I was a little skeptical, but it turned out to be very bright. Sometimes you just need a bright white light.
I have some smaller LED flashlights with red lenses I use outside most of the time when observing.
