The Meade Electronic Eyepiece is currently on sale here and I'm wondering if anyone has tried this particular device.
I have a small portable DVD player that I could feed the video out to and was wondering if anyone has done anything like this.

I think they are very nice for relaxed observing of the moon. I can't imagine any truly critical lunar observing, but for just poking around...
I even barlowed one on a friend's WO 66 SD, and it looked fine.

For $40.00 how could you go wrong? Well worth it just to try it out. I thought about that a couple of years ago when they were more then that. But I chose on hooking up my Canon Powershot to the T.V. instead. Thanks to the old Scopetronix setup. But it works more or less the same.

- CMOS imager (and rumor has that it has a low sensitvity imager)
- low resolution (I tink it's 320 * 240 pixel imager)
- max. exposure time: 1/30 sec
P.S. occasionally these can be found in sub-20 dollars price range.

You can forget deep sky imaging with the meade electronic EP.
But for lunar outreach at viewing nights or even bright doubles like Alpha centauri it works.

It's ok if you want to show, say, a group of kids the moon. It's not much good for anything else. But, if you can get it cheap enough, it's worth having in your eyepiece box for those sometime occasions.

These can be fairly handy. Before I bought my LPI I used one for imaging the moon and planets and I've even used it to image Venus in daylight. It works particuarly well on my PST. As an imaging device a webcam would be much better, but for a b&w video device it works fine.

I bought the Orion colour one years back (used). I was quite disappointed, but it wasn't expensive, so I figured I got what I paid for. It works ok on planets and the moon, but I later found out that it was better being used with a monitor (and the appropriate filter) for solar viewing. It did give me a taste for live viewing, so after looking at what was available, I'm waiting to purchase a Mallincam. Viewing through a monitor isn't quite the same as the eyepiece, so it isn't that high on my list.

I have this EP and think folks are missing a great application. I used this EP for solar imaging and it performed great. The monochrome highlighted the solar surface detail. I saw someone on Astromart post a stacked solar image using the Meade #902 and filled in color with photoshop and it was amazing. Not bad for the price, and you can achieve focus in the PST with it ... something to consider for solar imaging if you are just starting out.

Doug; we once set up my PST on my LXD75, fitted it with my Meade Electronic eyepiece and ran a cable into an computer monitor inside my house and used it to keep an eye on the sun for a couple of hours. It was kinda neat. It'd be easy to set it up to record the image with a VCR as well.

Hey John, sounds like that would be a fun thing to do one weekend.
Initially there were problems solar imaging with the PST due to focus travel problems but there were no problems with the Meade 902. I even used a solar filter with it, in the PST, and got great solar surface detail.
One day, while solar observing, a friend brought a pair of video glasses. We dropped the Meade 902 in the PST, hooked up the video glasses and WOW, what an awesome view.
It's too bad folks over look this EP because it is cheap.
