Human eyes may have sensitivity "issue" when compare with some modern sensors. But let's see: brain can capture up to about 30 frames/sec images. This is the necessity. If not, we are all eaten by preditors by now .
1/30 of a second does not give enough time for cone/rod to collect enough photons. CCD and CMOS imagers have nice QE or sensitivity figures. Larger pixel size means more light can be gathered; it's good. Larger pixels means on the same size sensor, less spatial resolution is obtained; i.e., lower pixel count and lower quality (blocky) picture, not good.
But these semiconductor sensors have much lower spatial resolution than human eyes.
Longer exposure time to let the sensor to have more time to gather light; it's good from higher "apperant sensitivity boost" point of view but tracking error or irregular OTA movement causes image blurs (technically called smear), not good.
Well, let's assume image intensifier is not used, then the trick we can try will be using normal CCD sensors (some selected CMOS as well) for "eye assist".
How to make CCD sensor handling long exposure:
1) long exposure "purpose made" video camera with low video update rate (e.g., image only updated every 3 seconds)
2) long exposure webcam (SC1 mod) display image on a PC screen (who cares about image capture/storage, just ignore them)
3) any astroCCD (e.g., DSI-color) doing the LiveView on a PC screen (who cares about image capture/storage, just ignore them)
4) "1004-JG" mod: this is using the video camera, modify yourself to do the long exposure, then use a video capture card (or USB module) to send the info to PC for displaying (who cares about image capture/storage, just ignore them)
5) P&S digicam, program it to take long exposure pictures, then display it on video monitor or transfer to PC for displaying (who cares about image capture/storage, just ignore them)
There may be other options.
I'd like to just bring some ideas up.

Where does the Mallincam and Stellacam fit in this scheme?

I guess as long as any of these mods produce desireable results, they'd have to be considered in. But that's only if I'm thnking of the same "in" as you are.

I feel this is a life style community who seeks for a way to compensate human eye's sensitivity issue.
Since the images are displayed outside individual's brain/mind, many can enjoy simultaneously.
May be an occasional snapshot as well, but don't call it imaging .
People don't think twice on how to use their eyes, thus such new gadget must be very easy to use and hope it can accomplish the same task. If there is no automatic adaptation, at most just use some physically accessible knobs and dials "to get it right", but not too many knobs, only the ones that is needed at that moment .

The new gadget box is doing some post-processing anyway. It just happens to be near realtime, sometimes transparent to the user, and easy to use.
Hey, these are also Walkman and consumer Camcorder's attributes.
