Here is last nights capture with the Samsung SBC-2000. The commercial IR filter has been removed and a IR cut filter was on the nose piece. This was AGC high, Shutter to 512, Color, White balance to manual RG 430 and BG 530. once again my reducer has now been pushed out to end of December

The American essayist and philosopher Henry David Thoreau wrote, "It is not what you look at that matters, it is what you see."

I've always thought this quote was quite apt for visual and video astronomy. For example, consider the star field below, near the star Eta Cygni, that I captured Wednesday evening. Note the star, HDE 226868, indicated by the red arrow.

You're probably thinking, okay, what is so special about this star? Well, not much. It's a standard blue supergiant star with an apparent brightness of about 9th magnitude.

What is special is what you don't see....approximately 2 AU away from the star (and too close to be distinguished at this scale, of course) is a massive unseen companion: the black hole Cygnus X-1.

Of course, I wasn't really observing Cygnus X-1. After all, it is a black hole and neither emits nor reflects light, but I was (at least in principle) observing its location. All in all, it was still pretty cool. (And with apologies to Thoreau, perhaps it is not what I look at, but what I don't see!)

(South is at top, East to the right. I used AAVSO chart 5995vh to confirm the field.)

A classic case of "there's more than meets the eye". Thanks for posting the image and the explanation.

Yes, very cool shot Michael, and I definitely agree with what you had to say about your observation. I too am going to do an in-depth look at its location, do a sketch of the star field, and later on after I scan it in I'll write where the location should be. It'll be pretty cool after all.

Great shots everyone!

Clear skies,
Brandon Doyle

Excellent result Bob.

I couldn't see the face while watching your broadcast but I can see it now

Looks like the archetypal 'Area 51 Alien' at the right of centre above the core
