A real nice M31 - you've captured the nebulosity and 3D spiral perfectly. Thats one to be proud of!

Keep the images coming

Thanks Paul,
I'll have to capture some more shots with the video cam. BTW, checked out the images on your website. Great stuff.

Here are some images I've acquired over the years with my MallinCam. Certainly not as good as what has already been posted here! But they are with much less capture time, and almost as good as the live images:

This was my very first image ever, taken on the first night I got the camera. In Toronto on an average night with an Orion Apex 102 (4" mak-cass). This was 15 x 2sec each. This was not as good as the live view on the monitor looked, a pretty common thing in video astro. I find it takes stacking quite a few images and some light processing to equal the "live" view.

Now roll a little while forward in time and under slightly better conditions with an 8" f5 newt, and this is the same target:

I still hadn't figured out the whole stacking and processing thing yet at this point... this image might have been a minute of 2sec images.

And finally, a year or two later still with my 10" newt this time. This was about 30 2sec images stacked. Pretty close to what I see live realtime:

Maybe one day I'll figure out image processing a bit better and be able to produce a pretty image. Enjoy, and I hope this helps illustrate how things look with various different scope setups.

Gord

A nice set of images of M82. Its very interesting to see what a difference aperture and sky conditions make to the final image.

Great job!

And remember this forum is for Assisted Visual Observing. NOT photo/electronic imaging. There are other forums for that. It your Assisted Observing device does integration of multiple framse that's fine, but images that are captured and post-processed belong in the imaging fora.

This is the best I can do at my poor viewing location of the Dumbell Nebula. I'm hoping to get a better screen picture at a darker location.

Thanks Neal

The images was captured using S-video to laptop and video card.

I change the gamma setting sometimes, which really helps.

Here is a M42 showing the two gamma settings. Single frame no processing captured with the video card. First with with the gamma setting at .45 second using 1.0

Brad,

Really nice look at the core region. Are they 2 second exposures? When I try to capture the full extent of M42 the core just gets overwhelmed. So for looking at what is going on, I settle for separate images. You can do neat tricks to combine short and long exposures, but I would rather not spend the time.

Here is a 12 second single frame unprocessed image of the lagoon nebulae. This is one that I always stare at for a while. C8, .3 fr, avermedia TV cardbus.
The live display always looks better than the simgle frame captures.

Hi Randy,

Restricting post processing makes sense to me with some limitation. The Mallincam has two outputs, composite and Svideo. I use the composite signal to drive an old TV that is my primary observing screen. I run the svid signal into a laptop which then drives a led monitor. When I get an image that I like on the tv I capture it on the laptop but there are color and brightness adjustments on the camera, the TV, the laptop and the monitor. Often an image that looks great on the TV is either too light or too dark or the color balance is off when its captured. For example, em nebulae may look brown in the raw image despite the fact that the color looked fine on the TV. For demonstrating what the camera can do live it would be reasonable to make simple adjustments like brightness/color balance/contrast before posting an image. In other words, I suggest allowing adjustments that could have been made before the image was collected.

Thanks,
Bill McDonald

And we agree, but there's a specific forum for 'imaging'. The images that are captured from video screens used for "Assisted Visual Astronomy" are fine, but we want to avoid significantly post-processed images in this forum... So far everyone's been pretty good about it...
