Milkyway wide field Mosaic, live feed images
      #2051172 - 12/14/07 04:13 PM

Hi folks,

Here is an (first) attempt to picture the milkyway with a Watec 120N video camera and a 15mm f1.4 CS lens plus UHC filter. Individual images are made at 256 frame integration.
Milkyway

The light pollution near the horizon at my place is severe. Visually the bottom half of the picture is plain gray. So this really is an example of assisted astronomy.

Clear skies,

Rony, thank you very much for the post because I did not mention this approach in any other thread and I do not think anyone else did either. For other readers: the astrovideo tools have C-mount lenses that can screw on. As a result, you can take some really wide angle sky shots. I have only tried it a couple times, but several people do it and swear that it's just wonderful for wide field work and outreach. I am sure Rony can provide particulars. Shevill Mathers turned me on to this approach. The lenses are numerous you can use. The technique is really neat.

Roland

Rony

Great job, a very unusual atmospheric image.
I can see the amount of imaging and processing time that has gone into creating this.

Rony, that is really nice...!!!

Makes me want to take my 180ED 2.8 Nikkor lens and play with it (nice and fast, and kinda short-ish). I will start hunting for the right adapter for the MCHP!

clear skies and great job!

Thank you for the kind words, guys!

As a matter of fact the use of the CS mount lenses is the primary goal for the Watec Camera. The Watec 120N is derived from a low light surveillance CCD camera.

The widefield lenses are great tools to show constellations and asterisms to newbies. It helped me to locate Collinder 399, the coathanger under lightpolluted skies. First I traced the asterism with the camera and monitor, then I was able to see it with the naked eye.

Clear skies.
