Not with the DSI, but with the LPI. Can't imagine it's that much different. works just fine. Use a keyspan USB/Serial adapter for autostar control as well. Actually there are some Mac native programs which you can use to control the camera and scope without Autostar, etc.

I heard (first post here) that the DSI isn't recognized. What Mac native programs will control the DSI? CF

Meade DSI works perfectly with Dell Inspiron 600m. Built in USB 2.0, 1.6 Ghz Pentium M with 2MB cache, 512 RAM. Has super fast refresh rates, even when running both Autostar Planetarium and Starry Night and Firefox in the background.

Was wondering would DSI, or other CCD software and camera be slow on a Laptop. Many Laptops are very slow compared to the Desktop eqiverant, as Most laptops even though they advistise they have Level 2 cach, don't have the important level 1 cache.
Since I don't have a Laptop I take my whole computer outside when I want to take photos with my LPI, or DSI.
I would think the Desktop disadvantages would be outweight by speed compared to a laptop?
A Laptop have the advantage of portiblity by far, but maybe at a disadvantage speedwise compared to the same speed desktop due to the desktop having level 1 and 2 cache.
Anyone notice the difference in speeds? comparing your desktop and Laptop.
I know everyone wants a laptop because the ease of setting up, no bulky screen, and tower etc to take outside, but the PC desktop may have the advantage over the Laptop for imaging.

Does the LPI/DSI require a specific amount of video memory for good viewing on the laptop?

I have a laptop from ECS model A928 bought in 2002 having 2 USB 2 ports with O.S. Win XP home and service pack 2 . but my Meade DSI works very slowly I suspect the USB ports are not Hi speed . What can I do to improve the capacity of the USB ports?

interesting read on the dsi cameras..they work with usb 1.2 but have to be the only usb device..and work far better on usb2. also some laptops do not send enough power to the usb port ...a pcmia card usb adapter should cure this.

I have an old (discontinued now but still and Ebay item) PC tablet called a Progear. It came with Linux installed. I removed the Linux OS and installed Win98. While it is not a pocket PC it does have a touch screen. I sometimes use that to run my astrogear and or telescope. The down side it is only has a 1.1 USB port but does have a PCMCIA slot.
As far as handhelds, from time to time I use one for direct scope control via Bluetooth, but not for the camera. Meade has a free Pictor imaging program for handhelds but I was never able to get it the work. It was an older version so I don’t think it supported the DSI. There is a Pocket PC client version of VNC that you can run on your handheld if you already have a PC controlling your camera. It works but it is slow.

I think it's probably safe to "unsticky" this thread now, it seems pretty clear what hardware requirements are best for the DSI. What say you all? I'll add a link to it in the "Useful links for beginning imagers" thread.

Tried the DSI with an older G4 TiBook/OSX but with only USB1.2 ports. That didn't work very well at all. Using DSI with Macbook/OSX and with the Macbooks USB 2.0 ports I am able to do everything I would want to do with the DSI camera. I was not, of course able to use Autostar Suite as it is a Windows platform software, but Nebulosity by Stark Labs allowed me complete control over the camera. They also offer auto guiding software that will work with a Mac and a DSI if one is interested. Nebulosity worked equally well in 10.4.11 as it does now in 10.5.1. It will not work in 10.3.9. The kicker on the Mac was to have native USB2.0 ports, so I would be willing to guess that one would not need a new Macbook if one's older iBook/Powerbook has USB2.0 ports.
