Last night at the club meeting swapfest I picked up a LNIB pair of these roof prism binos but can't find anything on them on the web. They are fairly new and unused and look like they could be a fairly expensive pair of binos. Does anyone know how good these are considered and how much they generally run? I traded a small mount for them so not a lot was invested.

They look nice enough. How's the viewing? Do they have phase coating? Perhaps it says on the inscription.

They are made exclusively for ALDI.com, which is strange because this is a grocery store and I can't find anything about them on their website. Anyways the box says waterproof/fogproof, nitogen filled, long eye relief (about 20mm), lifetime warranty, and a few other things. The eyepieces have about a 55 degree fov and the images at the edge are pretty sharp. No mention of phased coating. What is that BTW? Thanks.

That's surprising, I never heard of a 10x42 roof being sold through Aldi.
Phase coatings are explained here. The short summary is that it's what you need on a roof prism binocular to get an image as good as in a porro prism binocular - all else being equal.
Today it is also what separates cheap roofs from mid- and upper-level.

OK so about what % of roof prism binos made today have phase coated prisms? How much of a difference do they really make? What does this usually do to the price tag? If the box doesn't say phase coated does that mean they are not? ....And are they all made equal or is there variation in their quality? Thanks

Just my impression/opinion not based on hard facts: - anything over $ 300 has phase coatings; - most new models over $ 200 have it too, and you're starting to find it on cheaper ones.
They do make a substantial difference. Yesterday's $1000 roof binocular without phase coatings is easily beat by today's $400 model that has it. Again, just a personal opinion.
Is there anything in life where all are made equal?

I don't know what the price on these are but I don't think they were that high but the images seem very good. How can I find out if they have phased coatings?

Look here. Then again, if the images are very good, why bother?

OK I used the polarized sunglass method and found that they are NOT phase coated. But they still give nice images.
