I'm wanting to mount a red dot finder on my set of Oberwerk 25/40x100 Binoculars (Military Model with simulated leather). I bought a Stellarvue Red Dot finder that came with a Dovetail mount. It is to be installed using double sided foam tape. I installed it and it is simply too unstable for my preference. Has anyone installed a finder like this on there 25/40 binos? I'm thinking about getting a metal strip that I can wrap around the entire external dimensions but need to find a good way to secure it. Ultimately, I want a finder that is set and will be in the same spot each time I install it. Any ideas or suggestions are certainly appreciated!
Thanks,
Erik

I installed a red dot finder on my 20x90s using double sided foam tape and it seems perfectly stable. I don't recall if I used the tape that came with the finder or not (I may have used this finder on other scopes previously). You can get the double sided foam tape at places like Home Depot. Maybe you just need a different (possibly thinner) brand.
Using the tape is certainly a more aesthetic solution (IMO) than wrapping a metal band around the tube.

I absolutely agree that it would look better that way. Maybe there is a better alternative in the tape. I'll see what I can find. Thanks for the suggestion.

Velcro!.... Just kidding. Seems like you want it removable. ever try a magnet? I saw the leather. How bout using the double sided tape (3M )in between the surface leather and a thin precut steel plate for a magnet. of course you might have to do a little dremeling and a magnet of the right size and power. just beware that of some of these called mounting tapes have very strong acrylic adhesives which you might regret using. just my 2cents

Gee i forgot about the dovetail. These red dot finders remind me of after market pelletgun sights. I can imagine a hardened bracket that extends from the tripod mounting bolt then around and between the eyepieces or objectives then terminates with a riveted or screwed on rimfire scope base which will accept the dovetail. can also be applied to a around the width partial body tension clamp. just my sleepy mumblings i guess.

So you realize what I'm working with, the link below is to a picture of what I have. There is no tripod mounting bolt in the traditional sense. I currently have the finder sitting on top in the center near the back of the main casing.

Ok short of drilling and tapping an area of dead space, i give up.

What about using rubber bands around the binocular casing near the objectives? That would be less potentially damaging than a "metel band" and cheaper. The bands rot after a while, but again they're cheap and plentiful.

Here is where I put the dovetail mount for my Red Dot finder on my 25 X 100 bino. It's like a rock!

AJ, What type of tape did you use? What I've used has a layer of foam between the adhesives and I believe that is the main cause of the instability.

Hey now! Is that an attack on us velcro fans? I use a velcro strap between my Rigel base & Quickfinder to secure it to my 20x80's. I mount it the same way on my ST80. This probably wouldn't work too well on the military binos, but for those with standard giant binos it's an easy solution.

I used the double sided tape that came with the Orion Red Dot EZ II pointer. It is a thin foam tape.
P.S. No matter what the naysayers think, IMHO the red dot finder is one of the best gadgets there is for bino-astronomy.

AJ,
I'll have to look into finding some other tape. The tape that came with mine has very think foam and the base moves quite a bit each time I touch it. The movement bothers me as it's supposed to be calibrated to the bino.
Thanks
