My website needs a makeover - Advice Please
      #2075347 - 12/26/07 04:00 PM

Hi everyone,
I am still stuck in the stone age when it comes to web design. RIght now I just use nvu and occasionally will even make my pages from notepad and what little html source code I know. I really would love to update my site so that someone could browse my images by choosing to display them in various categories eg. type of subject(nature, astro, weather),type of object (NGC, Messiers, Cluster, Nebulas), equipment used, date, recent additions, etc. I am hoping that there is a very simple way to do this without having to make many multiple pages manually.

I am afraid that the only efficient way to accomplish this is to figure out all this PHP, SQL database, content management system stuff. My web page host is Yahoo Geocities Pro. Does anyone have any advice? I don't know where to begin and what the work flow is. Are there any online sources that will help me make sense of how all this stuff works? ... and is there an easier more efficient way out there?

Thanks,

Very nice site. I especially like the Hair Tips Links page!

My own site uses a very simple layout. Each page has one huge table on it, covered with thumbnails and descriptions. I use Dreamweaver to make and maintain it.

Feel free to check it out. No flashy graphics or etc. Just an easy layout.

I use Freewebs to make my astronomy website. They provide templates and you build and edit the thing online. Freewebs can be a bit slow and annoying at times, but the templates are nice and it's easy to use. It's also free.

I think for viewers to sort information to be displayed you would need mysql with php or some equivalent.

You dont need that much code to actually write a CMS for images in a database though creating an effective search engine can be quite hard. It will take quite a bit of reading to be able to bodge a site together which is what i usually do with php.

Good Luck if you go down that route.

Alex
