"New" LXD75 mount
      #2087638 - 01/01/08 01:47 PM

....With potential previous owners label on it? Apparently this owner was shipping the mount back to Meade. I bought this one "new" from a vendor (whom i'll not mention in public OR private) and noticed the previous sticker on the box. What to do?

I've written an email and asked "what's up?" and asked if perhaps I received a used mount in error. Luckily, I also have the previous owners phone number if I should need to call. Has anyone had anything weird like this happen before?

I'd complain about the "Second hand"...

Tell the company that if they're going to sell you "Second hand" equipment, you'd like the price to reflect the "Second hand" value... Don't matter if the previous owner only used it once and shipped it back, It's still "Used"...

See if you can get a discount!

Of course if there's nothing wrong with it, keep it.. Just try to get the discount if you can.

If I was you...
First I woud clarify if the mount is new or used, by calling to the wendor and to the "previous owner". There are a lot of reasons why the sticker is on the package. It is not necessary that the "previous owner" ever has seen the mount. If it is new and works properly, I woud accept the sticker and just use the mount.
If it is used but works properly and looks new, I would demand reduced price or new mount.
If it also seem used, I would return it and demand newone. And in that case I didn't hesitate to tell public the vendors name, so that others could be aware. But maybe better first wait untill you have got your goods.

I dont know your national laws but in here Finland exist consument protection law that concern also the vendor, if it is a Finnish company.

Although I'm in FULL agreement with you on this, He can NOT do that here. That would be a violation of CN's TOS, and the thread would be moderated...

I once bought a 'new' video camera that came with a tape installed and someone's family videos on it. Apparetnly it was a returned item. It looked new, felt new, worked new, so I kept it. I'm just glad the tape didn't have anything weird on it.

I did send the vendor an email. Not to worry, I have no intention of stating who they are. They're a good vendor and i'm sure it's an honest mistake-but I would like the price to reflect the merchandise as, if the sticker is any indication(since it was being sent to Meade)-refurbished.

Thanks all for responding.

That changes things!

If it "IS" a "Refurbished" (Sent back to Meade after sold to customer), then YES, you deserve a lower price to reflect that!

Try not to return the item though if you don't have to. Chances are, a Referb will be better than new, since Meade would have gone over any problems and checked out the whole unit.

Yep, the leftover sticker shows the customer shipping the scope directly to Meade. From there it must have ended up with the vendor and then on to me.

I agree that if it IS refurbished, it bears keeping for the same reason you stated.

My buddy says I should ask for half back. Says it's in worse condition than used if it's been repaired.

Thanks all for answering. I'll see how the dust settles before I decide on returning it or not.

My thinking is like this on Refurbished...

Something "New" is mass assembled in a factory and "Quick tested" before shipped out... If something goes wrong, the owner sends it back for repair...

When "Repaired", an actual "Technician" is doing more extensive testing as well as the repair that was needed (Why it was returned)...

If the customer decided NOT to keep the unit, the same "Repair" status happens, and this unit is sold as a Refurb unit...

So to me, a Refurbished unit has gone through MORE testing than an "Off-the-line" model...

I own a few Refurbished "things" around the house... They hold up just as good, if not better than the "New" things...

Besides, even a Refurbished unit STILL comes with the FULL warranty...

I had sent an LXD-75 back for warranty work and the the mount returned in much better than new operation condition. It was only for a drive replacement but the whole mount was adjusted. Since everything was covered I choose the option to send it back instead of getting the part. FWIW - I was very pleased.

Now that I think about it, there was no warranty card to mail in...as I just double checked. We shall see...oops, found it.

Where is this sticker? If it is on the outer shipping box only then perhaps they only re-used the outer shipping box and the all-important inner blue/white box has a new mount in it?

I thought the LXD75 shipped straight from Meade, hence no shipping charge from dealer. If so this would be Meade's mistake which makes more sense. I think your friend is unreasonable and would be expecting a lot from the dealer. But if they do pony up $300 let me know. I will gladly take your used/refurbished mount for $300 off your hands.

I say try it, if it works good keep it.

I agree about my friend. I laughed at his "half off" suggestion(he was serious). Not to worry-he also tends to predict my NE Patriots to be .500 each year......

I have a neighbor that is the same. He picks every product or service to death. He does get lots of discounted stuff for his effort.

I was told that they sell new mounts and would only sell a refurb/used if they announced it as such.... and as far as they know-this was a new one.

I'm going to take them at their word as the mount does seem brand spanking new as far as I can tell. They gave me Meades number and told me to give them a call......which I feel was a bit of a brush off.....but i'll do it.

At this point, i'm just curious to follow through and see where it leads me. lol

Did you ask about the other customer name/address and phone number on the box? Obviously it was shipped out more than once...

The biggest problem here is that you didn't get it directly from the manufacturer. Not that you can, in this case, but the problem is, the vendor may be telling the truth, they could have gotten this from Meade as a "new" product. They simply sent it along as such. So it could have been Meade that made a mistake or was trying to sell a returned product as new and the vendor had no knowledge. This sort of situation is the type that rarely gets resolved as normally both give you the "brush off" tactic you feel you may have just gotten and you end up in this circle where both of them just point the finger at the other and nothing ever gets resolved.

I would say if the mount looks new, and seems to work as a new product should with no noticeable problems, then don't worry about it and move along. It's not as if there's much you can do except to get all frustrated and rant and rave. I would certainly keep the evidence though, so if the product starts becoming faulty in an extraordinarily short amount of time, you can insist that your mount be replaced, not repaired, given that you appear to have gotten less than what you paid for.

If the inner box has been shipped cross country more than once, it too shows signs of use even inside the outer cardboard shipping box. I think it is much more likely that you got a brand new mount as you should have, and they simply re-used the outer shipping carton to ship to you.
