What Orion has always looked like to me...
      #2089046 - 01/02/08 01:06 AM

I have always been inclined to see this when i look at orion, Even before I knew what it was called or depicted in drawings, this seemed to make more sense to me. I have trouble seeing it any other way, until recently i inagined a mirror image and get yet another sports image. yes, I know that it isn't a perfect match, but a very close approximation, this way I don't have to use my imagination filling in above the shoulders and below the knees, i have tried pointing this out to family and friends before but until i could figure out how to make a visual, it was kind of hard, I know that the nebula isn't techically in the constellation, but this way it csn be considered as part of the big picture, no i don't want to rename Orion "tiger woods", but this looks a lot like one of my childhood idols, Payne Stewart's swing. comment are welcome and i would like to start a conversation on this. thanks

Intriguing! I've always seen the four bright non-belt stars as Orion's shoulders and knees, making him about twice the size that you see him. More precisely, I see the line from Saiph (Kappa) to Rigel (Beta) as the bottom of his "skirt." But this contradicts the star names, since Rigel means "foot" in Arabic. And it also makes Orion mighty small-waisted.

Now that you point it out, seeing Saiph and Rigel as feet and the Sword as a bent knee makes perfect sense. But I still prefer Betelgeuse and Bellatrix as shoulders -- which would make Orion like one of those cartoon characters whose torso is twice the size of his legs.

Second, binoculars.
Last but not least, telescopes.

Thanks guys for taking the time to respond, I just had to show someone, I guess having a fresh perspective on a group of stars can be a good thing, I just figure, they didn't play golf (or baseball) when they were naming the heavens, so this image might not have occurred to them, but from a modern point of view, as a teenager with a golf obsession, this was what it looked like and always has. I researched and found out what the stars were and their names when i was in high school, and every year since when I first see my old friend Orion, I get a happy/sad feeling knowing that he's back(good) and that I'm going to freeze my butt off for the next five months (bad). Glad you all liked my interpretation, and i am a little suprised that noone had seen it this way before me. take care.
