I had pretty much written off having much success with my old ETX, one of the reasons I sprang for a new ETX-125. My biggest problem with the 60 had been poor Goto performance. I guess my improved knowledge gained by learning how to use the new scope has improved my ability to properly align an Autostar system. I brought out the old 60 tonight to compare views between it with my new 20x80 binocs, and on a lark decided to attempt my 200th 2-star alignment with it. And guess what, it was dead-on with every object I went to!  I also realized how much easier it was to carry the 60 in and out of the house compared to the 125, which is considerable larger and heavier. I was using my newer eyepieces, nothing great, just Meade 4000 series, but they were much better than the eyepieces I had with the 60.
I guess I'll be keeping 60 after all! I'd like to get a solar filter for it, any economical suggestions?

Thanks for the links to the solar filters. Which of my two ETXs would be better for solar viewing? I know I'd save around $35 if I bought the filter for the smaller ETX, but I'd hate to do that if the 125 would give much better views.

I've found that as long my scope is properly pointed to due north and the scope is carefully leveled,proper 2 star alignment is achieved almost every time. This and the tracking of an object impresses me the most about these little scopes. Just be careful not to bump the mount while viewing.

Just a little alignment tip - the scope must be precisely level prior to altaz alignment but can be out in north pointing. Any error, resulting from the latter, in 2-star alignment will be in azimuth [horizontal] and scanning the scope left/right should find the 1st alignment star for centering.

To me careful and precise are one in the same. I'd rather it not be out as to due north and am as careful and precise as when leveling.The result for me has been a repeatedly accurate alignment.

I got my great results by first leveling and then just pointing the scope at the north star. I spent a total of maybe 30 seconds, and expected poor results, but got great Gotos, go figure...

Clearly my 'tip' is of no value to you Kenny as you know where north is but some folk struggle with this one and I was pointing out that whilst levelling is essential - north pointing is optional [in the context of my full msg]
