M33 with visual and astrovideo sketches
      #2090420 - 01/02/08 04:34 PM

The link takes you to the results of an observation period on the first day of the new year. Conditions were iffy so I could not make out arms like the excellent sketch that O'Meara presents in his Messier book when I did the visual EP sketch. However, the same conditions do not prevent the video astro camera from presenting a nice scene for sketching on the monitor. The sketch page includes both sketches.

My wife and I enjoyed a delightful review of the object from the 4 inch refractor. While I sketched, she chose to rock in a rocking chair and just take in the view.

For comparison, the second link is a sketch from the 12.5 inch Dob with the same video astro camera. While more aperture does help present exquisite detail, the 4 inch refractor view was respectable.

The orientation differences are due to differences in the scopes and whether a diagonal is used.

Roland,

The comparisons of the M-33 sketches here are most interesting. The video camera makes up for a lot of aperture
and your sky is pretty dark to get the nice 4 inch view. Oh, and all these sketches are wonderful.

Thanks, Frank. Skies were average for here with probably less sky glow than you have. However, as long as I am confident I have the object in the center of the field, the astro-video camera can detect an object much easier than the eyes in a sky glow situation...because the camera is optimized to work with much smaller signal over noise ratios than my eyes. The average improvement in normal skies is about 2.5 times the aperture gain by using the astro-video. The gain in heavy sky glow pollution situations is a little more because the eyes are simply not designed to pick up the smaller difference of the object over the background. This is why the sketches in our gallery that were done in Texas (15 miles from Ft Worth and 25 miles from Dallas central) were much better than we could have ever seen with eyes alone. Sorry for the long explanation, but I have thought of you more than once in the Chicago area. This tool might be a real help if you even go that way. It makes sketching DSOs come alive in a new way. Roland,

Great observations of M33 showing much detail. The astro-video camera brings out the faint detail of this galaxy nicely. Visually detail is not as easy to detect. Thank you for sharing them with us all.

Thank you for the comments. It truly is a privilege to be able to do study and sketch with the tool set we have. Roland
