Obs Roof Question
      #2092936 - 01/03/08 02:50 PM

Has anyone thought of or seen an obs built that looks like a regular shed, roll off, etc obs thats say 10' square, however instead of a roll off roof, the roof is actually on some kind of rollers that spins like a dome. Maybe with some type of removable skylight to look out of.

Basically it would be like a dome that doesn't look like a dome. To me, a dome says "Hey everyone I'm a dome with expensive telescope stuff inside, come steal me!!!". And mine would be visible from the street (in my side yard), so i was gonig to go with a roll off that looks like a regular shed (except of course with the rails coming out of 1 side of it.

Yes there was one posted on this fourm at one time that had a design much like you decribed. Maybe someone has a link to it. It was pretty cool.

I found this here .
I'm not sure if it less strange than the dome but it is a dome that doesn't look a dome.

Nice but obviously horrendously heavy and probably needing motors to rotate. There's no need for a 'dome' to be massive to enclose space.

Take a look at this one: www.cityastronomy.com/observatory.htm

Looks like an almost ordinary out-building when closed up so may deter anybody looking to steal astro-gear.

This is my observatory in Jackson Hole, the "Grand Cosmic Observatory."

My homeowners didn't want a dome, they wanted a structure that looked more like a guest cabin. The smaller structure is the roll off observatory, and the larger one is a "warm room" into which the roof rolls, so the rails are hidden.
