Why is the boss on an EQ6 Pro such a fancy shape?
      #2093288 - 01/03/08 04:32 PM

I am going to mount my EQ6 on a pier and need to get a friend of my dads to weld up a top plate. As far as I can tell the boss just sits inside a void, and two threaded bolts either side of the boss move the mount around to get exact north.

Therefore a rectangular boss of the same size should do just as well on my top plate.

Am I right, or have I missed something?

I think it is trapezoidal because the inside-front of the mount head is sloped.

Aw, heck, they probably made it that shape just so they could charge you more money.
You shouldn't have any trouble with a rectangular boss. I made one using an allen head bolt, which of course was round. Works just fine. Once the alignment bolts touch the side of the boss, I don't suppose they much care what shape the boss is!! Keith

I'd also go with a cylindrical head allen head bolt.

Cheers!
