CG5 advanced connection problem new
      #2093049 - 01/03/08 03:23 PM

My new mount works great except for one thing. Frequently i am getting the message "no connection 17", or something to that effect. When this happens, i need to align all over again. Is this common, im thinking i may just need a new cable?

From what I've read here, (never gotten the msg myself) that is a power supply problem.

Try wiggling the power cable connection right at the mount. If the power goes out, you have a loose power connection. I had the same problem. If you can solder, you can pick up a new DC power connect at radioshack and put it in. If not, I think you can try needle nose pliers and bending the center pin of the connection apart to make the cable fit more snugly.

Or it might not be the connection at all, just make sure you're using a fully charged battery tank.

Thank you kindly. Don"t have a tank yet, actually using my car. I did play with the pin a bit, and that seemed to have helped a bit

Yes, it usually is. It's actually a comm error between subprocessors but low supply voltage seems to be the most frequent cause.

That is intersting. I may pick up a power tank this evening. I think K Mart should have them. Maybe it is my car battery?

More likely it's voltage loss in a poor connection. As has been mentioned, the power socket on the mount doesn't necessarily make a good connection. The cigarette lighter plug at the other end is even worse; those were never intended to pass clean voltage to electronic devices. Make sure everything is clean and tight.

K-marts are now carrying the Sear Delco line of power supplies. Depending upon how long you run your set up, you may find the lower end ones (750 vs 950 or 1150) may do you fine. I've been running my laptop, CG5, TO Dew controller all on the 950 for sessions of upwards of 8 hours and I have yet to run out of juice.

Other folks here, who didn't have the advantage of a K-Mart return credit voucher like I did, think highly of the Home Depot's jump start battery (Husky, I believe).

Thanks guys, i"ll be sure to check all connections. I also wanted to add, the exact message i get is "no response 17". I am starting to hate that message. I normally know it says that because the motors start to run differently and the mount begins to slew indefinitely in RA.

Yup. That and "no response 16" are the two comm error messages that seem to occur with some frequency. The lack of motor control you mention is another symptom of comm failure between the motor controllers and the front end computer.

Thanks again John. If i can get this worked out, i do absolutely love the mount. It really is quite solid and accurate.

It'll be fine. Those mounts tend to work pretty well. The comm errors aren't specific to that model; they are inherent in the controller design so even the more expensive models (CGE, NXGPS, CPC) show the same symptoms when the power gets soft.
