Looks like I got some thinking to do.

By the way, here is a rather dumb question, I do you calculate the TFOV of binoculars?

I measure it by observing till I can identify the widest pair of stars that can be seen across the field of view at once. It is often not s wide as the specifications state. It is sometimes wider.

After my 7X35s died in a house fire, my next step was a 10X50mm Walmart special. They worked OK, but were heavy and hard to hand hold at that power. They landed too hard on pavement. Searching specifically for astronomy binoculars, I found my 12X50 Minoltas. The extra magnification is a boon, though somewhat lighter than the 10X50s, they are waterproof and nitrogen purged. They travel everywhere I go, and with their 5.5 degree field and very large sweet spot, they work well. I recently purchased a pair of 15X80 Steiners. Weighing only 3.5 pounds, with a 5.3mm exit pupil, a modest boost in magnification, and a HUGE boost in aperture - they are amazing! Although heavier, and much bulkier, when held properly, the Steiners are easier to hold on target than the 12X50s - and the view is a real WOWSER! Your Garrett 12x60's will be your "grab first" optics, and serve you well for many years.

I like the 12x60's. I have a 40 year old Pentax 7x50's. But,they don't have the rubber eyecups. So, I would have to put them against my glasses. (Which could result in scratch city!) And, shows less of the view.My Obie 20x80's are great for more closeup views. I didn't get the Obie 12x60's because the GO has more eye relief. I got the 20x80's because of the eye relief and EDz report on the Obie standards. I would recommend either to anyone who wants a good bino for a good price.
