Ok, so I am a beginner, but I'm anal enough to pay attention and try to do things right. I have been using my ETX125 up until now in Polar mode since I didn't have an autostar. It tracked fine but I had to find things on my own (not a real biggie). I installed my #497 and played with it a while and struggled to get it running. Finally I realized that I am not in daylight savings at the moment (default was yes). I assumed the "yes" meant that I wanted the Autostar to automatically determine (from my zip code) whether I was in DST or not. That said, I went through the following procedure and it worked well:
First, I used a bubble level to level the tripod. Then I pointed the scope straight up and used a bubble level to get the OTA perfectly vertical. I set the gauge on the left side so I had a future reference. Once I did that, I did the "set to home" procedure and locked the scope in place. I then rotated the tripod until I had Polaris in the center of my EP. I lowered the tube with the controller to perfectly level -- both with the angle indicator and with a level. I then hit "enter" and the scope chose Sirius. I centered it carefully and used up and right as my last movements. It then slewed to Capella and was already just about centered. I got it perfect -- again with up and right as my last movements.
Following that I asked it to slew to a few items. First the Andromeda Galaxy. It was near the center of my Hyperion zoom at 20mm. A double cluster -- forgot the name -- it centered right between the two and each cluster was cut off because of the lack of TFOV. Next up -- Mars. Check. In the FOV -- same zoom. I tried a couple of very dim nebulae. Nothing there but I couldn't see them with 5" and light pollution. Just trying to confuse it, lol. Finally I tried the Orion Nebula and again, in the field of view. I ended the test on Mars and again, it was in the FOV in the lower center. I stared at mars for about 20 minutes, looking for details, and all of a sudden, it started to fade from focus. I played with the focuser and couldn't get it. It was getting worse... I then realized I was dewing up. Night over...
Frankly, I was impressed. After reading all the horror stories, I expected it to fail miserably but it worked like a champ.
I still have a lot to learn, but I'm climbing up the curve as fast as I can...
*** Edit ***
I should note two things... Though I was doing Polar before my 497, I did this in Alt/Az...
Also, I built a cheap 12vdc power cable and ran the scope from a black and decker car battery charger. The motors were MUCH smoother and quite a bit more "snappy" in this fashion rather than trying to make the 8AA batteries do the trick...

Good job! I found with my old ETX-90 (non-LNT) that level and north make a lot of difference. If your GoTo's are good, then great. But if they start drifting over time, don't forget Train Drives. This should be done from time to time.
The Achilles heel of the 125 is weight. Be careful about loading that thing up, and if you do, you'll have to (somehow) balance it. A little care, it'll last.

Yeah, I'll need to retrain the drives. I want to do it outside in the light on something a bit more distant with a lot more magnification so that the "train" is a bit better. As it is, the scope is "idiot-proof" for the most part, lol.

Great report -- thanks for that, kenn. I have yet to try polar mode, and your session is impressive. Next time out....

DNTash -- let me make it clear -- I was using my ETX in Alt/Az for this goto session since I had a #497 controller. It did track well but not as smoothly as it did in Polar (without the #497). I haven't yet tried polar with the 497 but I suspect that will be even better, but with the gotos as good as they were, I don't need polar any more unless I'm just interested in contorting myself 90 ways to sunday. If you can get your ETX to goto cleanly in AltAz, stick with it because you won't be doing strange contortions to see through the EP...

Read about the SYNC function------ sometimes I just FAKE an alignment--- I never look through the scope, just press ENTER.
Then when the stars come out I GOTO a NAMED star, center it..... and SYNC...... then I GOTO another names star and SYNC again...... now my gotos are pretty good...... during the evening I continue to SYNC on objects and the gotos stay VERY accurate. Clear Skies!

That sounds like it would slowly refine the GOTO,mine is sometimes slightly off, how often do you do that? say hourly?
thanks, good idea !

Once I trained my drives, leveled, and aligned, my gotos were fantastic for such an inexpensive scope... While they above method may work, you probably won't get the same performance as you would with a good initial setup. There is another feature on the 497 that turns on a high precision mode or something of the sort. I haven't played with it yet, but it is essentially the same thing. When on an object, you turn it on and it makes gotos in the area more precise and/or tracking of that particular object more precise. Again, I don't know how this function works but I intend to play with it a bit over the next few nights.
Lastly, I edited my post above and it is worth mentioning again that I made up a DC power system (cheap) and it made a heap of difference. I highly suggest you provide power from an AC adapter or external pack if you are hoping for solid gotos and tracking...
If you are interested, go to radio shack and buy an "N" adaptaplug as it is the right size. -- about 4 bucks. Buy a little plug that goes into it and has two leads... About another 4 bucks. I also bought a cig. lighter adapter with bare wires and wired up a DC adapter for about $18 dollars total. I plugged it into my portable 12v starter/battery pack and it works WELL....

Thanks for that clarification, Ken. I have been a little concerned about my neck and back if I go to polar mode, and that's one reason I am sooooo happy with my crayford upgrade, which rotates , on my refractor. You give good advice there re alt/az. I'm happy for the moment, so consider it well taken!!
