M42, The Rosette, and The Leo Triplet new
      #2098697 - 01/05/08 02:39 PM

Had two beautiful but cold nights here in Western PA the past couple weeks. It's been so cloudy that as soon as I see the CSC says clear skies I drop everything and pack the car and begin driving out of the city towards dark skies.

Night One (20 degrees F):
Rosette

Total of 5.5 hours of 4-min ISO 1600 shots. I'm happy with it but I really wonder what it would be like with a modded camera....

Night 2 (8 degrees F):
M42

Total of about 2 hours of exposures ranging from 8 minutes to 4 seconds.

Leo Triplet

I know I clipped the black pretty bad here. This was just a test of the Pentax 2X teleconverter with the Pentax SDUF-II scope. Obviously you can only do so much with an f/4 scope but I think the detail in the galaxies was pretty good for an f/4 scope with a 2X tele. This is a 100% crop.

Nate...those are awesome. The Orion's Sword is especially nice. I love the smooth subtle processing you did. Top notch.

Very nice, Nate! Now get to the emergency room and take care of those frostbitten toes.

Thanks for all the comments guys. David, if frostbite feels anything like burns then I've definitely got it on my fingertips....

Really nice job! I really like your M42.
8F far from home! You're brave. At those temperatures I setup on the driveway... at least then I can easily run inside to warm up.

Nice shots, especially of the Leo Trio. It looks like you had a productive two days.

Nate,

Great images! Thanks for sharing them with us.

Is this possible to show us some 100% crops around bright blue stars in Orion complex? And 100% crops in corners.

This will be very interesting for me and possibly for others to see how good this astrograph is vs FSQ-106.
I stll not decided which one I will buy for my mobile astro photo.

No problem:

Corner Crop of M42
You can see that you get some color and also that some spacers or something start to show up in bright stars.

Full Size M42

This is at 100%

I'd be glad to hear any comments on how you think this stacks up optically. I'm really a newbie at this whole hobby and only have an 80ED to compare to as it's the only other scope I've used / looked through.
