Double Cluster and Orion new
      #2094129 - 01/03/08 09:40 PM Attachment (72 downloads)

This is the Double Cluster from last night. I'm new at refractor imaging but can honestly say these things are fun. No collimation worries and they seem right sharp.

I processed it two ways. One trying to bring out the background stars and the second way showing the stars to scale with the background.

The image is taken with a Canon 20Da, 17 exposures at 3 minutes ISO 800. Darks, flats and Bias applied. Stacked in IP and processed a little in PaintShop Pro XI.

I don't much care for this one but it does show background.

This one I really like. Seems a bit more natural. The inset is a magnification of the area just to the right of the central red star in the left cluster. A little refractor sharpness I guess. Haven't been able to do that with my SCT efforts.

Good star cluster shots -- the star colors are nice. (BTW, I like the 2nd one better.)

Very nice images. I prefer the first image. SHows more stars... I also love the star colours.

I also like the first one -- gives a good approximation of the visual experience.

Very nice, Jerry. I thing you've got it! A request, if I may. Since you're in the refractor phase of your mid-life crisis , how about shooting a couple of globulars when the nice ones are back? I remember how nice they looked when you were in the SC phase of the same crisis. It would make a fun comparison.

Interesting responses! I like the 2nd better - star colors look better to me. But I'd say you have a good rig there, Jerry!

Thanks folks. It cleared up again tonight so it's refractor time again. Think I'll try something with the FS-78. I'd love to have a good Orion in the bag. Tom had a great one last year I believe. Something like that would be good.

David, the "crisis" phases got expensive when it hit refractors. I'm hoping to cycle back to your rig (C-14) rather than to the "RC" ultimate crisis.

Jerry,

In the inset you have an interesting little asterism there. There are some faint stars all in a line, all similar magnitude, and two rows of them near the bottom left corner. "Jerry’s ladder". I think it is pretty fitting as you've certainly climbed the ladder in this hobby with your very analytical approach to equipment evaluation and imaging achievement.

Thanks Bobby, got Orion all dialed in and clouds started wisping through. Maybe Sunday night.

Thank you Steve. Looking at your equipment looks like I'm following your lead. I'm also on the Mach1 list too. Let us know how the FSQ performs.

Did get a little imaging on Orion before the clouds came in. This really has processing driven hard to get into the cloud structure. This is with the TOA-150 and 20Da. 17 exp, 3 mins at 800 ISO.

Just a really nice image, Jerry. And who said anything about an RC crisis?

Thanks folks.

Luke, the TOA won't frame Orion well without a Focal Reducer. They think way to much of the Tak focal reducer. I'd like to find a cheaper focal reducer for it that would work.

Superb closeup M42 image. It's hard to believe that you could pick up that much detail in the outer loop with less than one hour of total exposure.
