This weekend I took my first shot at imaging the Pleiades. For a semi wide-ish view I used my D300 with a Nikkor 300 f2.8 lens, all mounted on a HEQ5 mount.
After seeing some of the stunning results by others in this forum I know there is massive room for improvement, and I am open to all suggestions!
Shot January 5 2008. Nikon D300 / Nikkor 300 f2.8VR @ f2.8, ISO 800. Exposure 120 sec x 54.

Very nice wide field image of M45. It looks like the modern Nikon 300mm f/2.8 lens has a lot less CA than the 25-year-old Nikon 300mm f/2.8 lens that I used to use for imaging.

Nice one Thor, seems like the lens has very good edge performance when looking at the full picture at your web (if un-cropped?).
If you take some flats you will get rid of the uneven field illumination. I use a electroluminescent panel that works just fine.

LLEEGE: Thank you!
FoxK : Thank you, and feel free to post a D40 version, could be interesting to see!
s58y : Thank you! This is my first try at AP with this lens, but for "normal" shooting it quickly became my all-time "long lens" favorite.
Tomvictor : Thank you Tom! Yes it is an uncropped shot, and I really should have made a few flats while I was at it. And those panels seem like a great idea! (specially considering the lack of daylight up here right now...hehe).
novbabies : Thank you! And truth be told, the temp was not bad at all; a couple of degrees above freezing..(strange climate indeed, 200 miles north of the artic circle and not a snowflake on the ground yet..).
Buzzer : Thank you! And I do have gradXterminator, but I have not yet figured the best settings for shots like these (ie: removing gradients without impacting the nebula). But you seemed to have nailed it; any suggestions as to settings?
Dave M : Thank you Dave!
tidroplane : Thank you David!
FebStars : Thank you; it is indeed a beautiful target!

Thor, I actually learned how to use it from,http://www.astropix.com/, This is a cd romm tutorial, on how to use photoshop and some plug ins, for Photoshop. I do not know Jerry Lodriguss , and have never met him, but I learned how to use it from this tutorial. I am sure there are explanations on the GradX website also. But buying the cd rom will elevate your shots, it help me tremendously. Andy
