I had troubles with my guiding setup so I tried with lots of short subs to M42.
It's a composite image from 85x60" and 30x30" ISO 200, Canon 350 D with IR filter removed and ASA 10" f:3.8 astrograph:

The image is quite cropped.
Thanks for looking.

Wow, very impressive considering the short subs! I'm even more startled at the use of ISO 200. I thought the faint outer filaments wouldn't get out of the read noise...
What were the circumstances of this exposure; specifically light pollution?

Thank you!

Light pollution was very low. I travel to a quite dark place not very far from my home. Orion visual magnitude was around 6,4. Of course this helped. It was very dewy and with some ice (-2ēC).

Beautiful work, especially for short subs. Why crop it at that point and leave out the running man?

10" F/3.8 is the answer. It's almost a 1000mm Fl.
Beautiful shot with an even more impressive OTA.

No, no... the original field was wider, but as I said my mount didn't work properly that night. With 85 exposures, even they were of only 1 minute in order to avoid star trails, the frame was not the same in each one, so the final stacked image had great corners quite darker than the center. Maybe flats could have improved the result.
Thank you all for your nice comments.

I find I need to crop almost all my subs as I have a slight polar misalignment to help offset frames. Still a beautiful shot. How long was the wait for the ASA?
For the original poster, here is the actual FOV.

I was lucky, "only" two months. There was a stock when I bought it, but now there's a great delay.
Thaks!

Fantastic picture, with lots of faint detail despite the short subs. The resolution of the central features of M42 is amazing.

Man...that one gives me hope. I was concerned that anything less than 3-4 minute subs would get drowned out due to a low S/N ratio.
That is quite breathtaking!
