I guess I am a little too late for the December Challenge...
This was definitely an image of desperation. After a month and a half of barely any opportunities to image, I finally saw the potential for a few hours of clearish skies late Friday evening. I started imaging when there was scattered to broken thin cirrus (~0/8 to 1/8 opacity) and then 3 hours later it clouded over again. I stacked all my frames... even the poor ones, so that is probably one of the reasons why the image looks a bit soft and Alnitak is so blinding. Anyway I was just really happy to get out and use my equipment again and process something new for a change.

Very nice HH+flame image. The blue reflection nebula below the HH really shows up well in this shot.

Kerry,
Persistance pays off! I also had a small window of opportunity with clear skies on Friday night but did not image. It was pretty windy and I had the same high thin clouds.
The HH shows up very well even with your unmod. camera. I guess the 1.5 hrs of exposure helps a lot.
Great image.

Nice image Kerry! Good to see that you were finally able to get out even though the conditions were marginal.
I shot a whole series of HH subs not realizing that there was a high thin cloud cover...Alnitak looked as big as a basketball

THanks all!
Dwight, a cloud filter would be a nice invention. I'd pay thousands for that
Darren, I could hear the strong south winds but luckily my house was blocking them. Hope we get another opportunity sometime next week.
Bob same thing happened to me with Alnitak. I had one image where it took up half of the frame I was thinking there was no way this image was going to turn out ok.

I had enough clear skies on Jan 3rd to set up my scope in my new astro-shed and do a quickie polar align. Since then it's been nothing but wall to wall clouds. Normal for this time of year. Last year I had 1 imaging night form Thanksgiving to March 1st, and two years ago I had 2.
