Pretty crescent Moon, good seeing this evening
      #2108595 - 01/09/08 08:13 PM Attachment (33 downloads)

This was the sharpest of several shots I got this evening, using a Takahashi TOA-130S and Canon XTi. The seeing was surprisingly sharp given how low the crescent was. I had to resize the picture down to the CN 800 pixel width requirement, and there's actually much more detail available. Just some gamma adjustment and a touch of unsharp masking, that's all that was needed.

Gorgeous thin thin crescent - how old was the Moon at the time?

Beautiful! Did you capture an image with the earthshine too?

Not sure how old - I took the shot at 6:40PM CST tonight, Jan. 9. Does that put it past 24h?

Here's one of the better earthshine exposures, about 1.5 sec. at ISO 400 as I recall. The longer exposure is bringing out the atmospheric dispersion in the crescent and blurring out the turbulence some, reducing the resolution. Notice the star to the right.

Why don't you HDR combine the two?

I've seen references to HDR but I haven't tried doing it yet. Can that be done in Paint Shop Pro or PhotoShop? Can you point to some good websites or references? It's more than just cut/paste/blend, isn't it?

If you do it by hand in PS then the key step is a gaussian blurred mask made from the longer exposed image

Here is one way with colour range masks

and another using layer masks (I prefer to use this method)
