Hi all again,
I'm thinking to buy the Canon 40DH spectrum enhanced camera with built-in astronomical UV/IR blocking filter (Type Ib) from Hutech.. basicly I'm between the 40DH or the Canon Rebel XTi (400DH) spectrum enhanced camera & lens kit with built-in astronomical UV/IR blocking filter (Type Ib)
Do you know which one has the lowest noise reduction?
I believe the 40DH is much better for astrophotography than the 400DH.. right?
Any advise appreciated.
Thanx guys!

IMO the biggest difference will be in focusing, the 40D has Liveview. If you don't have some other focusing aid, definately get the 40D.

Thanx Mike!

A complete review of the 40D by Hap Griffin is available here: http://www.skyinsight.com/astrophoto/current.php
Bottom line is the 40D is better. I have an XTi and love it though.

My 40D replaced a 300D, But I've had issues with my mount since then, so I don't have a good feel for how much noise it has.

Is your question about the noise levels of the chips or the noise reduction technologies of the cameras?
The 2 cameras produce similar noise levels as they use the same chip. The big outstanding question mark is the difference between the 400D's Digic II processor versus the 40D's Digic III processor. Still though, that's more impactful to JPGs and not to RAW images, which is what you want to use for highest quality astrophotos.
I don't think you'll be disappointed with the noise levels of either camera. The 40D has a High ISO noise reduction feature in addition to a Long Exposure noise reduction feature. But neither of those are the ideal way to minimize noise in astrophotos. Taking several dark frames and combining them is the best way to reduce noise (they actually reduce thermal signal, which is not the same as noise).
Because they are so similar, I wouldn't let noise levels be the deciding factor between the 2 cameras. The more distinguishing features are things like the 40D's more robust body construction, Live View, Remote Live View, its greater similarity to the top line of cameras in terms of accessories it can use, its 14-bit A/D conversion. And for daytime use, its better autofocusing. If those things are worth the extra ~$500 to you, then go for the 40D. Otherwise, go with the 400D.
My 2 cents.
Best, Danny

Why have a DSLR for astrophotography instead of a ccd camera? Like the ones below..
- Apogee Instruments CCD cameras - Finger Lakes Instruments (FLI) CCD cameras - Meade Instruments CCD cameras - Photometrics CCD cameras - SAC Imaging CCD cameras - Santa Barbera Instrument Group (SBIG) CCD cameras - Starlight XPress CCD cameras
I mean instead of paying $2000 plus shipping for a 40DH I could get one of the above ccd's for less money.

40D is more like $1400+s/h for body. For such price your choice of CCD cameras would be VERY limited to low end only. The closest alternative is QHY8 which is close to $2k. I would seriously consider CCD if you want BW camera.

I paid $1209 for my 40D body only. I have watched the QHY rise consistently over the past year and although it is a great value, I don't feel it offers the same bang for the buck it originally did.

The 40DH I'm talking about is the following:
Canon 40DH spectrum enhanced camera & EF-S 17-85mm IS lens kit with built-in astronomical UV/IR blocking filter (Type Ib) and std Canon accessories. A kit also includes an extra battery pack and Canon carrying bag. Price $1995.00 plus shipping.

Oh, If you are good with your hands you can replace the filter ($70) by yourself.

I tried to order a rebel from them about a year ago. I knew the price was to god to be true and it was. Fortunatly noone was home during the day so they couldn't get ahold of me to upsell so they just cancelled my order. Said it was out of stock. Sure.
