hello! For first - sorry for my bad english. i buy a second hand heq5 few days ago. its like a build approx in 2005 year, maybe anyone tell, where i can see this mount fabrication date? i search over google about a heq5, and read a some info, but i have a couple unanswered questions, maybe anyone can give me answer? 1. - what long exposures i can expect with typically old heq5 with motor drives ( not syntrac / synscan, without guiding ) on focus of 400mm , 600mm , 750 mm and 900 mm? i think using a canon eos350d in prime focus.... 2. if i can think about upgrade, who is better - rajiva upgrade with conrad gears, or original synta's upgrade kit synscan? i think, a rajiva upgrade is more than 2x cheaper than upgrade to heq5 synscan, but what about in astrophoto fields - what is better, and is there a significanty better for a wise to pay a 2x more money? 3. i try a tighten a all screws on tripod, and i found, a one screw on lower detail, who securing a leg's steel pipe in a this detail, ( screw with internally hexagonal head), one of that screws could not thighten - the screws is seeming overtighten and now rotate freely. this is a important, a restore ir, or i can fix this place with superglue? i also be a very happy about a another ideas and so. PS where i can download a manual? i see a skywatchertelescopes.net, there is only a manual for "new" heq5, with syntrek.... thanks...

Hi Drago,
Welcome to Cloudy Nights.
The link below is probably the one you already have:
http://www.skywatchertelescope.net/swtinc/customer_support.php?id=89&class1=1&class2=101
You could also have a look at the Yahoo site for the Atlas/ Sirius mounts, which are essentially the same as your HEQ5

I think The HEQ5 is similar to the CG5 and SVP mounts here in the states? If so , these links may give you guidance on improving your mount for astrophotography:
Overview http://www.cloudynights.com/item.php?item_id=1736
Start with http://www.andysshotglass.com/SVPmods.html
After the relube, you can probably get 60 second exposures at 500mm to 600mm.
Balance is important and adjusting worm mesh gear also for astrophotography.
See also this link for more details: http://www.astronomyboy.com/cg5/
After awhile, you may want to try: http://www.store.shoestringastronomy.com/eq_mod.pdf
Autoguiding. Nice.

i think, HEQ5 is similar as Orion Sirius - a level up to a eq5 and clones ( cg5, etc). btw, andyshotglass.com is very terible resource - yellow text on a white background not readable :\
PS heq5 groups in yahoo like a dead, no activities on it

Andy's shotglass uses Flash, sounds like your browser doesn't support it, perhaps ?

My main telescope is a 200mm f/5 reflector which almost feels a bit too heavy for the HEQ5 (more counter weights would be needed). I have managed to take 30s exposures, but the result is not perfect. This may be due to bad polar alignment. Using a short refractor (120mm f/5), I have taken exposures of 60s. The refractor (4.5kg) is much easier to balance.
Currently I'm writing an autoguider application for my HEQ5.

The older HEQ5 mounts were not as widely available in the US as they were in Europe. APM in Germany (Perhaps Markus knows a good thing whern he sees it) for example had them way before any US or Candian dealer stocked them. I hope you find the info you are looking for and of course wish you well in seeking the information you require.
Good luck and Clear Skies Randy

How do you define, that some version of the HEQ-5 is "old" ?
I have also HEQ-5 mount, as non-goto version. It has the simple version of handcontrol box, with RA/DEC slew buttons.
Because of another question, I contacted Skywatcher tech support. They provided me two images that show differences in tripod top sections on HEQ-5. The version that I have (bought at 2006) has the protruding metal pin on the base plate -> lined up with the tripod leg facing north. The another model has pin in between the legs facing NE and NW directions...

I know you had trouble veiwing the andyshotglass but this link might work. It is an article detaling how to mod the hand controler to accept an autoguider.

I hope this helps

thanks for advice, this link ;looks ok, btw - black text on yellow background. but SkyView Pro mount is equivalent synta's EQ5, not HEQ5. HEQ5 is a completely different mount, i think. i also think, much better is try to purchase a "syntrek" upgrade kit for small money from another HEQ5 syntrek owner, who make a mount upgrade to "synscan" - goto. upgrade includes motors, gears (whos in old mounts is from plastmas, and a not so good periodic), and hand controler...
