WR140 approaching periastron
      #2126095 - 01/17/08 07:51 AM Attachment (137 downloads)

Here are a couple of spectra in preparation for the Periastron passage of binary WR system WR140 this time next year as part of an international pro-am project
http://www.stsci.de/wr140/index_e.htm

They show the doppler broadened emission lines from CIII and IV. The differences between the spectra are likely to be real as there is continual variations due to turbulence in these high velocity winds.

Robin

I checked the web site but I'm still not sure what WR140 is?

Clear Skies.

Hi Rich,

WR140 is a binary system with a Wolf Rayet star (a hot massive star near the end of its life, losing mass rapidly through powerful stellar winds and on its way to going supernova) and another hot O type star. You can see the orbit here
http://www.roe.ac.uk/~pmw/Wr140orb.htm
It is highly eccentric which means that interractions between the powerful stellar winds of the two stars (particularly the WR star) increase dramatically around periastron producing all sorts of changes in the spectra from radio to X rays and in IR brightness due to carbon dust which the professionals are trying to unravel.

Nice work Robin - it's been a long time coming but shows the amateur can do spectral science

That is good work, thanks for that.
