Who Piggybacks? - With What?
      #2126653 - 01/17/08 12:56 PM

Been considering adding a refractor on my CPC. I would hate to call it a spotting scope although that would be one function. My 50mm SV finder does OK but sometimes I can't find faint check stars with it. It's also seems to show some abberation around the edges although I've never tried it with a high quality EP.

Primarily, I'm wanting something for wide view observing. Given the fact that I have the 50mm, I would want to make a reasonable jump up in aperture-probably 80mm minimum.

Just curious what you guys use and why you chose it.

I should also add-how do you mount it?

I'm very happy with my setup. For wide-field and AP I will take my C80 off it's CG-5 and piggyback on my C925. Works great once you get a counterbalance system for the bottom.

This is a very popular thing to do and if you search back in this forum you should find several threads on it.

I use my Pronto - because that's what I had. You'll see lot's of folks piggy backing what they have.

Back in the NS11GPS days the Celestron 80 and its' sister clones were very popular for piggybacking if one was looking to add something they did not have already. Today you have a much better and larger selection to choose from. Your budget is pretty much the limit.

In all cases you will need a counter weight system. Needed mass will vary from scope to scope of coarse.

I'd say your minimum aperture could go as low as 50-60.

My Stellarvue 80mm NHNG bounces back and forth from my CG5-GT mount to a piggy-back position on my CPC800. Works well for me.

I have an Orion 80ED piggybacked on my CPC 11XLT. You can get what you need from ADM Accessories (I got the 125 mm rings for my Orion 80ED):

You may have a classic now. I didn't see the black NHNG on the SV site the last time I was there, only white or blue.

I'll ask Vic how many he made in black. I've noticed that they don't come in that color any more, not sure why not tho.

On my list of things to do is to send everything to Dr Clay one of these days and have him tweak everything. Actually I'd love to drive everything out there and watch him tweak it.

Just did a google, didn't realize that there was a supercharged scope.

Just doing a pun on your Boss scope and realting it to your Boss Auto (and mine)!

Interesting.

Sorry I didn't get the joke, brain still in work/serious mode. Hang on for one second and let me fix that... OK better now! Yes there really is a "SuperCharged" scope. My little British bombshell will do about 140mph as long as your heart and your shorts can handle going that fast with your TOS about 4 inches off the ground. That's close enough to the ground to read the load ratings on most peoples tyres (tires to us Yanks) when you're stopped at a light.

Piggyback??? Yeah, I do that too. I think it works great. I mounted the Celestron Onyx 80mm EDF Refractor on my Celestron 9.25 CPC. I get a very good wide field of view with the refractor and is very good when looking at large wide views such as the Pleides. I used the ADM mounting rings and the ADM counter-balance. The total set-up added about 17 pounds to the CPC but it handles it very well, as it is balanced.

Thanks! That was one of the scopes I was considering. Does the 17# include diagonal and EP?

Something I've been forgetting to ask - your piggybacks do have some sort of quick release right?

Quick Release: On my CPC 9.25 with the ADM Mounting Rings and Counter Weights. The Refractor can be removed by looseing two wing nuts and slideing the scope off. The 8 pounds of counterweights can be removed by looseing one wing nut and slideing them off.

Once your scope is mounted on the CPC is it possible to "align" it like you would a finder?
