2" Eyepiece vs Binoviewer new
      #2140867 - 01/23/08 06:26 PM

Hi:

I would like to know if one can still star-hop when using Binoviewers.... I know that using a 2" eyepiece is good for star hopping.. Would the binoviewer using 1.25 duel eyepieces be good for star hopping... . Or would I be giving up the freedom of using 2" Eye pieces.... !!

I would be using the Binoviewer through a Celestron OMNI XLT 120 , 4.7 inch Refractor...

Celestron astronomy binoculars...with Monopod..

Favorite and interesting Eye Pieces.. AgenaAstro 2.3mm ED. Orion Deep View 35mm 2 inch.. Owl 2 inch ED Barlow....

Im breathing.. and strangely against my consent.. and Im aware of it..!!

It will work the same but I would worry about losing light grasp in a 4.7" scope, and not seeing the fainter stars that you want to star hop with.

A binoviewer with 1.25" eyepieces will have a much smaller FOV than the F8.3 scope with a 2" 40mm 70° AFOV eyepiece.

I star hopped with 1.25" eyepieces just fine and saw many people do likewise, so yes it's possible.

I've had no trouble swapping back & forth between the Denk II & a long fl 2inch eyepiece, as I see fit. Balance is no issue with my Orion 12 XTi. I can see that it would be an issue with some other scopes, but a bit of creativity should overcome that in many cases.

I have a weight I can hang on the handle of my LXD75 SC8 to keep it ballanced when I take my binoviewer off.

When I'm using my binoviewer, I'd hate to pull the pounds out of the focuser, put in a wide field 2", and hope I haven't lost my place. Using a Denk, I switch to the lowest power, and starhop around. Obviously, the field is smaller. A decent finder and slowly panning around work for me - but the field is smaller.

Depends on the degree field of the eyepiece, and consequent field of view of the scope, and other factors such as finders mount etc., and skill of observer...but in short yes.
