I got this mount a bout a month ago. I noticed that while slewing from either extreme west and when it has to do a meridian flip, on occasions the motor runs but the mount does not slew(it actually stops). secondly when using a 10 inch OTA(lx 200) i can see the star dancing while moving from east to west; thirdly at slew speed 2 when i press east or west the star moves half the distance of my 12 mm reticle eye piece, stops a fraction of a second and moves. Are these symptoms of the gear binding or gear slack? Can i adjust the set screws without having to loosen the four 5mm screws( why must i loosen the 5mm screws to adjust the set screw i dont understand this) Thanks Dr.Suresh India

I beleive the single set screw is a "push-pull" screw, the other 4 are to "even out" the pressure on each side of the gear. I would think that those four screws would be "balanced" if they've never been adusted. If this were the case, then it may be that you only have to adjust the 1 setscrew to either tighten or loosen the mesh. This is what I did on my old EQ3-2 mount. I'm sure someone will clarify this better.

Can you clarify if you are using a GOTO mount, GOTO capable (EQ-G) mount, or the original classic EQ6 (simple stepper motor) mount?

It sounds like you need to set your backlash settings on the hand contoller. They are normally set way too high a number, and cause these types of motions. My settings are at about 00:00:20 on RA and Dec. When slewing with speed 1, the mount moves as soon as I press the arrow button, and it stops immediately when released. Higher speeds may cause a bit of over shoot when watching thru an illuminated reticule, or high powered eyepiece. A high number setting may actually cause the mount to stop and drift back, or keep going after the button is released. You need to play with this under the stars.
Your gear mesh may also be a bit loose. You can test this inside with the scope off the mount. Put the dovetail in the saddle, and tighten it, and both clutches. Grab the ends of the dovetail and without applying much force, try to wiggle it side to side for the Dec. test. If you feel more that a very slight wiggle, and I mean VERY SLIGHT, then you should be OK. The gear mesh should be good. For the RA test, extend the counter weight bar, lock it, and grab it at the end. Now try to wiggle it back and forth, and feel for any play. That bar is long, so you can exert a fair amount of force, so go easy on it. Tiny bit of play is OK. If you need to adjust the gear mesh, go to this website, and follow the instructions to adjust the gear mesh. DO NOT over tighten them. Gears must have a tiny bit of play in them, or you will cause premature wear or damage to them. You will hear the buzz with your ear against the mount when you press the slew button to test. You will also feel the buzz vibration with your hands. Adjust, and test one gear set at a time. Go by feel. Then turn on the mount and test by sound and vibration.
