My ancestors arrived in the USA with William Penn in the 1600's and move to Canada in 1801...seeing the shuttle launch today reconnects me to my roots...WOW

Just amazing the amount of energy contained in that fuel. That exhaust plume is 3x the length of the shuttle and lasts how long......8 min or so.....WOW.

Have you ever stood by one of the shuttles? HUGE!! It's hard to believe that they can even get off the ground, never mind be in orbit within just a few minutes. Great shot! Keith

When I was in England in the USAF, I had to stand alert on the runway in case the shuttle had to abort. We were in direct radio contact with Houston and could hear the launch. 15 minutes we were told to stand down as the shuttle was already over us, and another station stood by. 15 minutes from Florida to England!

I happened to catch the launch on a local educational channel last night. The really cool thing was the big fuel tank (built here, by the way) moving away after jetisonning. They showed it venting off excess cryogenic goodies. Just a really cool scene!

I went on a tour of the Martin Marietta plant where they make the fuel tanks. They use some kinda of really exotic metal. The guide was telling us about it while holding a small piece up to a BIC lighter, after about thirty seconds he asked if anyone wantined to touch it. I touched the other side and it was cool to the touch, amazing stuff.
