I just took 20' off of them, if you want any more off of them you either have to climb up there and do it yourself or pay to have the arborist come back. I didn't want to "hat rack" the trees, it's bad for the trees and it makes them look terrible when they start to put out branches.

This is looking excellent Karen! I'm trying to talk one of my friends into making a copy of your neat design for himself. I kinda loaned him my old 12" Lx200 to maybe get him thinking along those lines! I'm definitely pointing him to this thread, because your idea is just awesome.

I was up in the obs tonight with the lights out and it ain't too shabby even with the trees. It's way better than sitting in the driveway between two houses and having to tear everything down every night.

Karen,
It's amazing how much more observing time you'll get with everything set up and aligned!!! Even when you're dog tired, a short session isn't out of the question!
Very nice job!

Just got back from saving lives and stamping out disease. I'm heading out to the obs to work for a bit, need to do the last bit of painting and get started on the flooring. More photos later today.

Thanks for all the compliments and encouragement, I never would have even considered this project without all the support from everyone. I'm sending each and everyone of you a big box of debris from the roof tear-off as a gesture of thanks. Included in each box will be cedar shakes, asphalt shingles, scraps of Douglas fir sheathing and hundreds of rusty nails. As a bonus each of you will receive mementos of the observatory build as well. Each of those collectible boxes will contain at least one cut-out from the stair stringers, several short useless lengths of 2X4, 2X6, 2X8 and 2X12 lumber, 3 or 4 small pieces of oddly shaped OSB from the wall sheathing, a scrap of siding, 1 tab off of a new asphalt shingle, a handfull of bent nails and the foul language that came with them and 3 Shiner Bock Beer bottles filled with concrete dust, saw dust and..wait for it... rat/mouse droppings from the attic space over the studio/control room. These items are guaranteed to have been a by-product of the build and are genuine BYO trash. This trash is impossible to come by without a substantial investment of time and money and it will no doubt inspire you to build a BYO observatory of your own just so that you can have more of it. I'm going out the the driveway to begin packing up your gifts. Thanks again for your support!

oooo goody, I'll be watching for the package. Can I have my bottle of dust with extra rat droppings please?

Great thread Karen, thanks for sharing what must have been a very hectic few days with us. Has the 4 legged crew gotten back to some form of normal since the guys left?

The puppy people are back to being their "normal" selves. Shadow came up to the obs yesterday, looked around and hobbled back down the stairs. She's an old girl, 11 years old, and a flight of stairs with out substantial rewards in the shape of "cookies" is more than she wants to deal with. The Great Dane, Jake, is still totally baffled by the whole project. He wants NO PART of the dark and spooky stairs; even if you put a treat on each step he's NOT going for it. Shadow happily ate all his treats, went back down the stairs and looked at me like "do that again!" Jake left in a snit and sat outside glaring up at me like he can't figure out how I get up here. Jake is a sissy.
