Ring Nebula in the daytime??
      #2232736 - 03/03/08 08:05 AM

I was wondering if you had a ...say.. 10" or 12" decent grade scope, be it Cass. - Newt.
IS it possible to see the Ring Nebula naked eye (with the scope...duh...and any EP of choice) during daylight hours?
Obviously you need a good guidance system.... go-to...GPS, whatever, just to be in the right area to see this object in the EP.
Has anyone tried this?

I have seen Venus,Jupiter,Moon during the day easy, but I have never tried a DSO like that, or ANY dso for that matter.

( I was told this was possible from someone I will leave unamed due to a possible internet slap)

To MEEE this just seems way to far and deep to even get lucky to spot.... someone prove me wrong please!

I would think you would need to be in say, Alaska where it has somewhat darkness for 6 months? In essence it would be dark during the daytime. Or maybe during a solar eclipse?

What about using a CCD cam in video mode????

Hi Daniel,

No, it's not possible to visually detect the Ring nebula against a daytime sky; not in any aperture telescope. The contrast between the nebula and the sky is simply to minimal to be discerned, visually.

There has been a picture of the Ring Nebula shot with a mallincam in broad daylight and that has been mentioned on this forum(I remember someone named Rock who took the picture?)

I thought so. (Using a CCD) I hear those mallincams are pretty darn cool.
Maybe one of these days... if I ever get out of debt somewhat.. I will put it on my list of things to possibly maybe think of wanting to somewhat sqeek by without getting put in the doghouse and purchase one of those.

I would love to see the shot of it during the daytime.

HEY.... lets start a thread on just posting pic's of DAYTIME CCD pic's!

Go to Rock's Mallincam web.site and you will see that he has also captured globular's during the day as well.

If folks would like to continue the off-topic discussion of CCD imaging of deep-sky objects during daytime, perhaps it should be moved to a thread in one of the astro imaging or video astronomy forums?

I agree. But besides the Sun, Mercury, Venus, Earth, Moon, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, and Iridium flares (all which I've seen in daylight) and a handful of stars, is anything else visible VISUALLY (with or without a telescope) in daylight?

Comets have occasionally been visible naked-eye during the day and more often with a telescope -- most recently Comet McNaught. Many daytime meteors are spotted every year. And I bet you could see the ISS naked-eye in optimal conditions.

Also, the "handful" of stars that can be seen telescopically is actually pretty large, if conditions are good and the scope is big.

If you know precisely where to point a [large] scope in daylight hundreds of stars to maybe mag 4-5 can be seen under very transparence conditions. I've seen to mag 3 with my goto 12" SCT from London so living in a desert isn't necessary

In answer to the original question, this implies that at least one deep-sky object can be seen during daylight: the Pleiades.

Daylight to me is broad daylight and not before sunrise or after sunset and If at noon or 1 pm I could move my 10" scope toward a spot where I could see stars or the Pleiades I would be more than happy to try or Jupiter for that matter lol

I have seen most of the classical planets during day time naked eye. Mercury did I see only during the total solar eclipse two years ago from Side, Turkey. Only Saturn has eluded me so far. Who has seen Saturn naked eye (or visually in a telescope) in daytime?

I'd hardly describe M45 as a DSO but both it and all the planets Mercury to Saturn [if well placed] can be viewed telescopically at midday if the skies are crystal clear [hazy is a killer] and you know where to aim - I cheat with goto

In "broad daylight", I've seen naked-eye Venus quite a few times. Through a telescope, visually, I've seen Mercury, Venus, Mars, Juipter, and Saturn. A few years ago, our club had telescopes set up at the zoo for some event. People were freaked out that at 2 in the afternoon, they could see Saturn through my scope! They all swore that I must have had a picture of Saturn taped to the end of the telescope.
