iPhone SDK and astronomy
      #2240507 - 03/06/08 06:06 PM

So Apple released the iPhone SDK today. Pretty much all the APIs are available - those using the camera, MultiTouch, the location software, and the innovative OS.

Coders can sell (or give away) apps through iTunes. They will have till June to fine tune them, as the apps will require OS 2 to run.

How might they leverage iPhone features to make compelling apps? Perhaps a simple planetarium app that can pull GPS data down to display the sky at your location and time, with pinch to zoom in on objects? Or, more ambitious, an app that "looks" at the sky and tells you what you see? Telescope control by USB? Or through the network?

Any thoughts?

I just want a VNC client. There is now a remote touch pad for jailbroken phones. This would be nice to have with the SDK. The pad allows you to control your PC via the iPhone with it acting as the touch pad for your PC or Mac via a wirelss link. It just needs to be on same network.

I'm pretty sure a VNC client was mentioned today. If not, I doubt it'll be long before one appears.

The big question is which apps will Apple allow to be released? They're keeping a tight fist on the control even though they've released the SDK (unless there's been more news...last I heard was a few days ago).

I would like to see Starry Night on the iPhone. At least the telescope controlling functionality over bluetooth. That would be pretty neat.

Hopefully all the app coders that have been writing stuff for the jail-broken phones will do it for the SDK also. I use the VNC app a lot.

You can control a remote telescope with an iPhone. It is a pretty powerful device.

Bisque is completely recoding The Sky so it can be compiled to run under several operating systems. The result so far is Sky X for Macs. Sky X runs under OS X and since iPhone slso runs OS X, IMO there is a possibility for a port to that device in the future.

Both iPhone and iPod Touch have wifi and iPhone has Bluetooth connectivity so using them as a virtual control panel at the scope is certainly doable.

Exciting times for devs and users ahead as astronomy apps make the leap to modern platforms and leave DOS, serial, and parallel ports behind.

I would expect a copy of the PocketSky for the iPhone before a full blown version of TheSky, although the Bisques haven't given any attention in long while to the PocketSky program.

I see this thread is a little old, but though some may be interested in a new app for the IPhone called Starmap.
It seems like a nice program, especially the upcoming version 2. The author says that Apple will not allow any app on the Iphone that controls a machine (including telescopes) because of libility issues. who knows, maybe that will change in the future. Check out the app at the dev's web site:

I've done an iPhone app - there's a lot of competition on that platform, it's pretty brutal. But what astro apps would you like to see?
