Minkowski Catalog new
      #2248000 - 03/10/08 12:10 PM

Hey all!

I've observed a handful of the better known Minkowski planetaries and I was wondering where I could find a complete listing of the entire catalog. A google search turned up a whole 4 results with "Minkowski Catalog".

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks!

Simbad is your friend! I was also curious on this topic, as I have done most of the Abells planetaries and it's time to start on a new catalog. You spurred my interest...

According to Simbad ( Link to Simbad ), Minkowski has FOUR catalogs of planetary nebulae. Quote:

Quote:

Details on Acronym: M

M = (Min) (Minkowski)
Write: <<PN M 1-NN>> or <<PN M 2-NN>> or <<PN M 3-NN>> or <<PN M 4-NN>> N=80+56+55+18
Object: PN (SIMBAD class: PN = Planetary Nebula)
Note: 'PN 1-NN': (Nos 1-80), (Nos 81-103) are HII named 'Min 1-NNN'
'PN 2-NN': (Nos 1-56), (Nos 57-74) are HII named 'Min 2-NN'
'PN 3-NN': (Nos 1-55), (Nos 56-62) are HII named 'Min 3-NN'
'PN 4-NN': (Nos 1-18), 4th list introduced by Perek+Kohoutek, from a list of Minkowski, 1965
Objects are not numbered in the original lists, they have been numbered later in the literature. PN M 2-1 (Table I, 2nd ref.) is stated to be non existent in Perek+Kohoutek

Stat: is completely incorporated in Simbad

Ref: =1948PASP...60..386M
by MINKOWSKI R.
Publ. Astron. Soc. Pac., 60, 386-388 (1948)
New emission nebulae (III).
o Tables I, II: <PN M 3-NN> (Nos 3-1 to 3-55). Table III: <Min 3-NN> (Nos 3-56 to 3-62)

Lists are:
Min 1-<81-103> (Example: Min 1-92)
Min 2-<57-74>
Min 3-<56-62>
Min 4-<1-18>

So you want images and coordinates of all the Mink planetaries? Simply use Simbad. Here's how:

1. Click on the link above.
2. Click on "Queries"->"By identifier"
3. Type in the name of the object you want to query (ex. Min 1-92) and hit "submit id"
4. Once the object is found, scroll to the bottom of the page and click "Aladin Previewer" to view a DSS ~15'X15' image of the object (usually sufficient). If you want a bigger image or different color, you'll have a manually specify an image source (ex. POSS II Red from ESO) and size using the Aladin Java Applet. Lots of the Mink planetaries are small so you may have to load the Aladin Java Applet anyway just to figure out which "star" in the Previewer image is the planetary nebula.

Thanks for the question, as you got me reminded and stimulated again to create some finder charts for all the Minkowski catalogs. Heck, I didn't even know there was more than one till I did the research for this post! I'll get started right after I finish ALL the Abell Galaxy Clusters

Thanks! I've never been on the SIMBAD site before. Lots of good info there if you know how to find it. Looks like it might take some learning.

To pull up coordinates and images, I usually just use the Digitaized Sky Survey page.

Thanks again!

.....a little while later.....

what about Minkowski 2-9, the Butterfly?

maybe I'm not reading this right, but according to SIMBAD are some of the objects cataloged as "M" and some as "Min"?

hmmmmmmmmmm

You can download all the listings of the Strausberg-ESO Catalogue of Galactic Planetary Nebulae in Excel format at http://www.blackskies.org/intro.html#Files. The spreadsheet includes data on 1143 planetaries (and all the Minkowski's) including PK numbers, positions, mag, size, constellation, chart number and a check list on whether Kent Wallace, Jack Marling or I made a positive or negative sighting. I started compiling this spreadsheet in the '80's and Kent Wallace took over, but a quick check shows I have observing notes on 136 Minkowski planetaries. Most of the Minkowski's are mag 13-15.5 and less than 10" diameter, so require fairly high power to see a disc. I could go through my notes and come up with a list of the better targets if you're interested.

By the way, Doug Snyder's web site has a great collection of information on planetaries, so spend some time there.

Hah! You're right. As I said, I just did the research when you asked the question.

I think what was going on was that objects abbreviated "Min" are NON-PLANETARY nebulae. The Minkowski planetary nebulae are entered into Simbad as "PN M 2-9" for example. The correct numbers are:

PN M <1-1> to <1-80>
PN M <2-1> to <2-56>
PN M <3-1> to <3-55>
PN M <4-1> to <4-18>

So... enter "PN M 2-9" and you'll get the Butterfly.

Thanks for the questions! As you can see, I'm learning this as I am telling it to you.
