Can anyone in the southern hemisphere help me? new
      #2256859 - 03/14/08 07:59 AM

I'm trying to do polar alignment, and you would think it's rocket science. The manual is of no use because it doesnt list the home position for polar alignment but please, prove me wrong. And to top things off the search function on this site may as well not exist.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks
Sandy

In polar mode the home position is the telescope aligned with the fork tines pointing at the south celestial pole. The eyepiece port should be on the upper side of the fork. The dec. axis should be horizontal.

Thanks, and thats the way I had it but it was way out when doing an alignment. I must be doing something wrong I'll check my set up now that it's daylight.

Silly question; does the R.A. seem to be off by 180 degrees when it slews to the first alignemnt star? If that's the case I'd be tempted to try it with the visual port pointing down in the home position. If all else fails a master reset may straighten things out.

Sandy:

it doesnt seem to matter which way the visual port points when you start- at least with my ETX

I do it exactly the way John described-not surprisingly as I took his advice when I first went polar -and like you I live in Sydney. I use a spirit level across the fork tines to make sure they are horizontal.

are you sure you have selected polar mode in the controller menu?
