I'm curious as to the magnitude of the stars discovered. I would assume they must be very faint (15th+)? Mr Q

Or actually looking for novae (sudden increases in magnitude)? That's my guess. The supply of faint stars is practically infinite.

I like those "amateurs" with their 40" scopes.

At least, they could give more info on the new stars, eh?

Yeah, I presume that the Japanese word for "novae" was translated into "new stars," as evidenced by the phrase, "they want to find super new stars this year."

Interesting article that's probably got messed in translation which I suspect refers tp supernovae [SNe] discoveries of which there are maybe a >100 per year [>1/3 by amateurs] and not a dozen as quoted. There are many amateur teams worldwide doing this painstaking work including UK [Tom Boles has >100 to his credit] and in France, the States and, of course, Japan amoungst others. My mate Ron Arbour in UK discovered SNe 2008s a month ago via his 16" homebuilt Newtonian and typically reaches mag 18 via CCD [like the Japanese team] in a 30s exposures. BTW - those Japanese amateurs seem young to me

Nice Observatory too. Considering the cost of housing in Japan they must have good paying jobs.

Try latest bright supernovae but the recent gamma-ray burst in Bootes at 7BLY was 10 million times brighter than a typical SNe at that range which briefly reached naked eye mag 5 but there's no report of anyone seeing it - unless you know better
