I shot through a 2" diagnal on SCT Meade LX 50 8". How long am I supposed to hold the shutter open on "B" mode. I did some 5 sec and 10sec exposures of Saturn, Mars and Orion nebulae and the tracking was horrific. I was bummed. I thought I could atleast get 10 sec before movement was apparent. The scope was polar aligned. I didn not bother turning on the RA and DEC. Maybe next time I'll do that.
Any sources I can go to for time exposures. Thanks.
I used a Hartman Mask and that worked well. How big should the triangles or holes be? I have 3 triangles with 3/4" sides. I definetly could see the 3 Sirius's or Saturns come to focus.
Thanks,
Mark

mark, at prime focus you will have to track. there is essentually no time limit for an exposure without tracking with any "through the scope" method.the smaller your fov the worse trailing you will have. you can go 10 secs without tracking using wide-field only and then only with a shorter lens

go here:
http://www.covingtoninnovations.com/astro/astrosoft.html
And download the "Astrophotography exposure calculator".
It's a freebee, and I've found it to be very good.

I forgot to mention the Nikon FE has a T-adapter to a 1.25" opening not a 2" opening. Thanks for the references. I can not wait to get Covingtons astrophoto book. Ordered it a week ago. Mark

Hmmm... It has to be unzipped and then installed after you down load it, but I didn't have any problems setting it up. I know quite a few other people also use it, but perhaps there is a problem on the website right now.

Wow. I was not even close to the correct exposure time according to Covington in Astrophotography for the Amateur. Saturn f/10 exposure 1/30sec. Mars 1/250sec. Now wonder there was trailing at 5-10secs without RA motor on!! At least photo place did not charge me. Mark

I'm glad you got it working. I normally "bracket" a shot both above and below what it recommends, but I've found it to be pretty accurate.

You should post this on the software forum. There is NOTHING I have found on the internet that does this as a standalone product, they are all webapps.
It took me a while to find this post again. I wonder if we could have a best of software sticky on the software forum.
