Bit the sub-angstrom!!
      #2268639 - 03/19/08 07:43 PM

Bought my DSPST .5A and am now waiting. Reading around seems to me that Vixen zoom will do best, so I ordered it too.

I hear very mediocre reviews of the CEMAX's.

I can't believe I dove into solar observing..I saw some AMAZING daytime views through my friends DSPST recently and just about died! I could NOT keep up with the changing views over a three hour period. There was fine detail and there was much more than I expected. Wow....

Isn't DSPST a .6A rather than a .5A? Most of us are confuse about this.

Hi Lee,

0.5Å / 0.6Å it doesn't really matter, given that there's quite a range in the bandwidth between individual PST's. I can't remember what specs Coronado quoted now, but it wasn't the 0.7Å of the single stacked full aperture filters. So you couldn't really quote a 0.5Å figure for the specs of a DS PST. Having said all that, I know from observing that the b/w of my PST is as narrow as my SM40 filter.

It's now all over the internet: The newest DS PST's are advertised as <.5A indeed - and NOT .6A. That comes directly from Coronado, and no, there hardly is any variation between PST's according to Coronado. For instance, ~.96A and ~.98A is the SAME system. There are no 'great' ranges among new PST's. The quality tolerances are apparently very, very rigid when it comes to QC. Don't count on anything worse than just under .5A for a DS PST and just under 1A for a regular PST.

Believe me if I didn't have this assurance from the top, I would not have purchased.

I have heard TeleVUe Plossls are a good way to go for Solar viewing.

Coronado told me to send the unit back if the so-called "real sweet spot" isn't right near the center of the FOV! I was told the "sweet spot" simply refers to when you tune a feature on the Sun to a specific sub-angstrom wavelength centered at 656.3nm.

I will be sketching every free day I get!!!!!!!!

Hi Longfocus,

I'm sure you will enjoy your DS PST, and if Meade have tightened up on the QC of the PST that will be good. However stacking two 0.96Å b/w filters won't get you 0.5Å, you need to start off with two 0.7Å b/w filters to get that

If not <.5 A, then you are saying that there is false information all over the internet as well as from Meade/Coronado on the subject of new DS PSTs. If what you are saying is indeed correct, then I send my instrument back on the premise of false advertisement.

I am teasing in a way and just had to for unknown reasons: the new .5A PST's are that way internally! Check out OPT for example. Many other vendors are now selling them too.

One thing always got my attention before biting the bullet into H-alpha Solar Astronomy......the complete and utter infectious dedication you guys have when it comes to the Sun!! Believe me, it's your fault but soon to be my great pleassure in life.

Next thing I know I will become an eclipse chaser!!
