Binocular Mounts and Tripods - Favorite Combos
      #227720 - 10/21/04 02:08 PM

Actually, I posted portions of this elsewhere, but thought it would do well here. Many of you should have some good stuff to add here.

I use both straight up tripods and tripod/parallelogram mounts as binocular mounts every time I'm out. My favorite choices are:

Bogen 3211 with 3130 head is my most used tripod. I never have felt like I'm up tight against a tripod, so I'm very comfortable with it. Good for my binocs up to 4#12oz Fujinons. Although in a pinch, I've used it to mount a 8# 20x80 and although overloaded, it worked. Tallest tripod combo I own, but has no elevator crank.

Bogen 3246 legs with 501 head holds all my center post design binocs 8# or more with ease. Heaviest duty tripod I own. Smooth fluid motion and pretty tall, not as tall at the 3211/3130, but the elevator crank is great. The fluid motions still work very well with a 22x100 or 25x100. I'm 6'1", and maybe need to scrunch down an inch or 3 when looking at zenith.

I have several lighter weight straight-up tripods that I use for lighter weight 12x50 or 10x50 or 8x42 binocs. I have an old Orion SloMo adapter mounted on one of these tripods that I often use (with binocs up to the weight of the 15x70s) when I'm measuring and want fine movement. Lightweight tripods I've used include Orion Paragon Plus HDX, Slik U212 and Velbon CX690 and Smith-Victor which looks just like Orion Paragon. The Pargon HDX is pretty good, but not very tall. The Velbon is very light, good only for 8x to 10x binocs, or best left in the house for the 35mm camera. The Slik is old and shaky, but it works. The Smith Victor shakes like a leaf in the breeze. None of these are tall enough to view zenith, and still I need to scrunch down a bit when viewing lower.

I have two other Bogen heads I bought cheap. A Bogen 3025 minihead that has no fluid motions. It's either locked or unlocked, and good when I need an extra head for a light load. Bounces with any pgram on it. A Bogen 3047 head , also not fluid motions, but when mounted on my 3211/3011 tripod, it's capable of holding a 10# binocular. An old heavy clunker, but very capable. I relied on it to hold 25x100s and 22x100s until I bought the 501 head.

Bogen 3011 (same as 3211) with Virgo mount pgram , versatile, compact, easy to move and good for anything up to my 4#12oz Fujinons. Have used it with long 5#12oz 20x80 Standards, worked OK. Nice thing I like about this setup is you can fold up tripod and pmount like a long pole, without collapsing or dismounting anything, with binocs still attached, and carry it over your shoulder or under your arm out the door or around the yard and be set up in 20 seconds. Cannot be used seated. My ready to go pmount.

Several different tripod bases with Universal Astronomics UA Unimount Light Basic with a deluxe L adapter with swivel movement. Currently I'm using a lightweight surveyor tripod to hold this mount. A breeze to move binoculars around to view in any position. Better for standing than sitting. Best use for weight up to the 4#12oz Fujinon 16x70s, with 3#12oz Oberwerk 15x70s it's like the binoculars aren't even there. With binocs over 8# it's do-able, but can be considered taxed. My best standing mount, but not always set up.

I use several tripod bases with UA Unimont Light Deluxe . Recently dedicated my Orion Paragon HD-F2 tripod to this mount since the mount is used mostly for seated. My Paragon HD-F2 tripod has a broken leg lock and can only open two leg sections. In this position it is extremly stable, but not very tall, perfect for a heavy load on the UA Deluxe while seated. If I'm using this Pmount standing up, it goes on the light surveyor tripod, then the Light Basic goes on one of my other tripods. The 6 degrees of movement in the UA Deluxe is a considerable benefit over the Light Basic for seated use. Still I think best used with binocs of up to 8#. My perfect reclined viewing setup is this tripod/mount with Fujinon 16x70s.

For binocs like 22x100 and 25x100s that weigh up near 10# I like the Bogen 3246/501 head combo . I find the Unimount has too much of an eccentric load with these big binocs. It holds the binocs wherever you want to point them, but takes an awful long time to quite down. It works, but for my real big binocs, my preferred setup is the Bogen 3246/501. Solid as a rock. Seems like not even a second of shimmy.

For seated/reclined views with the Fujinon or anything lighter, the UA Unimount Light Deluxe cannot be beat.

I can't say I have a favorite combo because I have just one tripod/mount setup sadly. BUT, I can say I would like to build a cement pier into a wooden deck so that I can attach my wishful & future UA Millennium p-mount on it.

Ed,

Kudos for a very thoughtful post. I am sure this should be part of the "Best of" section....

Many forum members know the Bogen 501 fluid head is also my most used bino mount. I like to add a few addtional comments about this model:

1. The Bogen 501 head is rated for a 13.2 lb load but it can handle much lighter optics just as easily. The main reason for this flexibility is Teflon friction adjustment knobs for both altitude and azmiuth. This feature let you increase drag on the fluid head without locking it. I usually don't need to apply any tension at all when using my 3.6 lb 80mm LW. If I switch to my 8.5 lb 25X100 all it needs is a quick turn on the altitude tension knob. You can also use the tension knob to increase friction if your encounter dramatic temperature swings.

The Pan handle of the 501 head can be rotaed in a 360 deg arc and locked in any postion. It can also be pivoted away from the head on a different axis or detached for storage. I don't know any other fluid head in this price range(US$ 135) offering the same features.

2. Another thing I like about the 501 head is that one can slide the dovetail Quick Release plate about 1.5 inches fore or aft. QR plates comes with both 3/8-16 and 1/4-20 mounting screws in a elongated slot, making it easy to achieve perfect balance with 1.5 ft long long binos such as the Oberwerk 22X100 or 25X 100 IF.

I highly recommend ordering extra QR plates (BG 3433PL , $21.95) and a 2nd pan handle(BG 3433HK , $26.95) if you decide to purchase the 501 head. I usually keep the L tripod adapter and QR plate attached to my binos when I dismount them . Makes remounting binos much easier in the dark. An extra long 501 PLONG quick release plate is also available but pricy. ($62.95)

Ed,

We have discussed max height of Bogen 3246 tripod before so this post is for those who are less familiar with the Bogen line.

First of all, 3046/3246, are the same tripod . The 3046 has clear(sliver) finish, the 3246 has black anodized finish. The same rule applies to other models: 3051/3251, 3021/3221WN, 3058/3258 etc.

The 3246 tripod EdZ has is an older model with two sections. Tandem legs in the upper setion and a single leg in the lower section. I have a Bogen 3246 purchased in 2001. It has an additonal leg section inside the mid section to extend the tripod another 19". The new version Bogen 3246 is 70.5 inch heigh with just the legs or 89.4 inch with center column fully extended . Add 4 inchs for the tripod head and this tripod is tall enough for 7 footers. Center column travel of the 3246 is 18.9 inchs.

The Bogen 3058 is the tallest, heaviest in the Bogen line . It can reach nearly 9 ft and support a 44 lb load. Wt is 17.4 lbs for the tripod legs alone. Center column travel is ~ 10 inch.

Bogen tripods offer a lot of feature/value for your money. The selection of good tripods that can reach over 6 ft is very limited. Price for a Gitzo MK II 76 inch ht. starts around $330 for the legs alone . I have a QuickSet Sampson tripod rated for 40 lbs and can reach ~80 inch . List price is over $700 for the legs alone. You can buy a new Bogen 3246 WITH 501 fluid head today(OCT 2004) for $339 .

that's correct on the 3246 tripod Erik. I bought mine used from an Astromart seller, and it is not as tall as the current. A good point I forgot to mention.

And now that I see the models #s, I must have used a wrong # for my extra heavy duty non fluid head. It's not 3046. I'll check it when I get home.

We have some other tripod and mount posts like this and they most definitely all need to be gathered into one group in the best of.

edz

My large Bogen nonfluid head is a 3047.

Like my fellow countryman friend Steve N ( yes I classify him as a "friend" in spite of his constant ribbing :-)
I too have a relative paucity of binocular supporting mechanisms -- but since I own only two pairs of binoculars which have built -in tripod adaptors , I actually have more than enough -- which is another good argument I could use to persuade my better half that another binocular purchase would be prudent :-)

As every member and their dogs probably know by now , the only really decent tripod and mount I own / use is the Manfrotto 055B pro ( alias Bogen 3021 / 3011 ) and the 501 head , the combination of which I am eternally indebted to another "friend" Erik D , for advising me to select.

Also following Erik's advice , I purchased the extra panning handle and I like the sturdy , ultimate control feel of the twin -handle arrangement , even though the sheer weight and heft of the combined set -up looks quite ridiculous when only my 10 x 50 Swift Kestrel is attached to it.

It would look even more ridiculous if only I could find a way of attaching the Swarovski 8 x 20 to the contraption.

Much as I like this set -up , it IS a little TOO heavy to hike around with -- period.

Even though I'm barely 6 feet 1 ins tall in my 1972 polka -dot 4 -inch heeled platform boots with Tina Turner wig firmly attached ,and although the combination CAN be adjusted so as to point the binoculars to zenith , I find the position necessary to adopt to make use of such a configuration somewhat conjusive to chronic back -ache, so tend only to utilise the position when I'm in a particularly masochistic mood.

I also have a very lightweight Miranda Triton TP10 tripod complete with pan / tilt head and single handle , which plays an integral role in my "cycling pack" as described in a recent post I sent to the Cloudy Days forum.

The Miranda tripod / head would be ideal for a muscularly challenged dwarf , but is quite useful for those of regular dimension fortunate enough to have a chair by their side , providing the chair legs are located two feet below the level of the tripod legs and the binocular has 90 degree oculars.

Perhaps my most used "binocular support system" is the humble window mount , which comes with the added excitement of it's clamps being liable to snap without warning.

This possibility, I find , keeps me "on my toes"--
--and I'm a firm believer that the more alert one is ,the more pronounced visual acuity tends to be.

Monopods and inverted broom handles have yet to take their places alongside the above items ,cluttering up our hallway or dining room , but even either of those would be infinitely preferable to my most despised mount of all -- the dreaded ,absolutely terrible, EQ1 German Equatorial Mount , which if it were made of wood , I would gladly donate to the local community for it's forthcoming bonfire night -- an act I now regret having done last year with my wooden alt -azimuth mount during a moment of belated spring -cleaning.

Regards , Kenny

Ed,
I agree 100% since my UA Unimount Light Deluxe works great for bino's under 5 lbs but for my bino's over 5 lbs the UA Unistar Light is more steady . For heavy bino's like my Apogee RA-88-SA's I just purchased the Helix Hercules 12" fork mount and mounted it to my old Bogen 3040 (same as 3046) tripod and it seems to be very stable but it's been overcast since I received it yesterday.

It really looks like Tim Hagan (Helix Manufacturing) has a winner in this one!

Before I finished up my big P-Mount for my 20x110's, I was using a Oberwerk wooden surveyor's tripod with a Manfrotto 3263 geared head, with a weight capacity of about 22 lbs.. now I use it for my SV Nighthawk NHNG 80mm scope. For smaller bino's, my combo is a 475 tripod with a smaller/midsize Monfrotto 3275/Bogen 410 geared head, which works with all my smaller 80mm and smaller bino's. I love the geared heads, makes it easy to track smoothly.

I have a SAMSON Quickset Tripod Head combo , capable at lifting 40 pounds.

I currently mount Burgess 25x100 and C5 with ease. The Height is about 80 inches when pulled. They weigh about 6.5 Kilos.Pretty happy. The can carry more weight certainly.

HMMM, almost 4 years later and I'm still relying basically on the same setups as my primary use mounts.

Standing in my den right now is
a 3011 with a 30130 head holding a 4.5# binoc.
a 3246 with a 501 head holding an 8# binoc.
a 3211 with the 3025 minihead holding a lightweight cradle for small binocs.
And there is another 3011 with an F12 head with the Orion slo-mo holding a 2.5# binoc.

There's also an 028B with a 501 head standing in the corner for the big boys.
and there is a little 3201 holding the Virgo Skymount.

I just received used Bogen 3040 and 3050 tripods (same as 3046 and 3051) that I bought as a pair.

I have 3047 heads that came with these as well and I can see that combined with the 3050 this config will be unusable unless I get much shorter or for birding.

So, as of right now, the 3040 will be my favorite with my Paragon Plus mount on it. Does it count if that's all I have to compare to?

PS

I need a plastic leg cap for the extendable portion of one of the 3040 legs - it also keeps it from coming all the way out of the assembly. I've seen them on the net in packets of 5 for $10.00. Anyone got one they wanna sell? Used is fine too.

Thanks

I agree on the Hercules mount that Tim makes. I have a 12" mounted on to of a Quickset Hercules tripod ,tall model, and even with it extended way out its still steady as a rock. I am using it with my Miyauchi Saturn III's. Wayne
