That is a nifty sliding counterweight you have there. Is that available commercially? Was it an aftermarket add-on? Does anybody know a source for something similar to that?

Jeromeco, Why woudl you get a 5 SE when you have that nice 5" apo??? Rob Quote:
Fair question, Rob. I have managed to hurt myself over the years. Dislocated shoulder and a couple of bad elbows.
While I CAN move the AP around it weighs in at 80 pounds as pictured. The little cat, I can pick up with one arm as a complete unit and put it where I want.
I also got rid of my ancient Coulter 17.5" dob for the same reason. I was fond of it too. My wife used to refer to it as the "Circus Cannon".

No, it's not a commercial setup. I had a machinist turn it from a piece of 1.5" brass bar stock. The rest of the setup was fabricated by me. (The whole tale is posted here If you want to take a look.) Hubert

Thanks Hubert,
I thought not but it was worth asking. I have a similar setup on the Clark refractor, but on both sides. I have a 6" in progress and I thought that would be a nice touch. The brass weights on the Clark were also custom machined.
Thanks for the link and additional explanation.

Here I am with my latest refractor. It seems to have been made from PVC pipe and a 50 mm lens of 1500 mm focal length. It's a singlet lens but the previous owner says it is made from some special FPL-57 glass. The eyepiece is another singlet lens of about -50 mm focal length. Altogether it gives about 30 power but the field of view is tiny beyond belief. It came with a certificate claiming it had once been owned by a famous astronomer.

Well maybe Galileo owned it - he used about 30 power in a setup about like that!

That is possible I suppose but I believe Galileo used cubit sized PVC pipe and the PIC processors in this mount are later than 1001 series micro-Babbage units from his time.

Ken,
Be careful with that mount, make sure you don't overload it!

Vixen has lowered the prices of their Porta Mounts, so I picked up the Mini Porta for my Stellarvue 66ED, "Mini Me."
