My AR5 solar setup. It has been masked down so that I can use my 2.5in solar filter. Going from 5inches to 2.5inches increased the focal ratio to about f/18.

yeh, I know for AP it'll need an Atlas or a Losmandy G-11, but I tried lifting an Atlas at the astronomy store yesterday and it was like 50 lbs, doable but not enticing. The ASGM is less than 30 and is very easy to move outside and quite steady visually..sets up in 10-12 minutes and ready to observe...in warm weather haven't noticed any thermal issues/delays, but I usually setup in daylight and let it sit for an hour until it's dark (except Saturn yesterday evening...did 20 minutes viewing in daylight/dusk and seeing was very good, best views ever last night). I guess if I had a dedicated garage/driveway I could go bigger and get a wheely thing, but I'm limited to back yard at home. Retire in AZ with an 8" in a dome, that's the ticket...

here's a last pic

Love these 5" scopes

Here's another one of mine. This one's an AP 130 F8, oil spaced pre-Starfire of 1986 vintage. I removed the old 2" focuser, cut back the tube 6.5" for binoviewer use sans OCS and added an AP 2.7" focuser with backplate from D&G. The finder is an old ring with a 1/4-20 threaded counterpoise weight to balance the finder. I lock the ring in place with the weight and another 1/4-20 screw on the top of the ring. I collimated everything (focuser, diagonal & lens)using my laser & Cheshire.

I'll tell you what, this is rapidly becoming one of my favorite scopes. The optics are SUPERB being super smooooth, NO zones and maybe a hint of over correction...maybe..but it could well be the eyepieces. Color correction is excellent, period, even though it's a pre-Starfire design. The scope is a perfect match to the G8 for visual use.

Jeff

Then there is my newly completed Jaegers 1970's vintage 6" F10 project. Again set up for binoviewer use sans OCS.

I paid particulat attention to collimation of the focuser and lens as this critter has a Chromacor nested inside. Icollimated everything with it in place. The attention to detail has paid off as there is VERY little on axis CA.

This lens is also super smoooth and no zones.

And yes the old GM8 is being stressed a bit but does very well with the load, though my G11 is a much better match.

Jeff
